Despite its few shortcomings in the performance and camera department, I still believe Redmi Note 12 4G is currently the best budget phone you can get under Rs. 25,000 in Nepal. The competitor for this phone is the new Galaxy A14 5G, which brings a better camera but compromises in almost all other aspects. It doesn’t even feature a charger in the phone. If you are a gamer, you can also consider Poco M5, which equips a more capable CPU. But it misses out on an OLED screen, an ultrawide camera, and a hardware-based gyroscope and charges slower at 18W. Redmi Note 12 is currently the best phone you can get under Rs. 25,000 in Nepal. Despite a few shortcomings, the phone stands out from the competition as it offers the best balance between price and features.

While the AMOLED display is the main highlight of the Redmi Note 12 4G, it is better than last year’s Redmi Note 11 with its night mode camera performance. Xiaomi could have chosen to stick to the Snapdragon 680 instead, however, as the Snapdragon 685 used on the Redmi Note 12 4G took a toll on battery life–while not really offering significant performance gains.

So, after going through all that – did the Redmi Note 12 4G live up to the tradition of being a good budget smartphone? I’ll say yes. For the price of RM799, this is a good phone and I can recommend it to everyone who is seeking a phone at this price point. There are certainly some drawbacks – particularly MIUI – but I can look past it just because of the price.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 4G smartphone is available in Redmi Note 12 5G and Redmi Note 12 (China) variants. The smartphone was released in March 2023 with 4G network connectivity and decent specs. The smartphone offers a huge Li-Po 5000mAh battery with supports 33W wired charging. Also, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 4G smartphone offers three standard color variants which include Mint Green, Onyx Gray, and Ice Blue options. Moving to the front display, the phone renders a 6.67 inches AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1200 nits brightness support. Also, you are getting Gorilla Glass 3 protection and an IP53 rating for dust and splash resistance. As for camera quality, you will get a decent triple camera setup including a 50MP primary lens, an 8MP ultrawide, and a 2MP macro lens. As for the selfie, a 13MP selfie camera is also present on the front and you can record 1080p videos at 30 fps from both end cameras. The performance department is handled through the 6nm Qualcomm SM6225 Snapdragon 685 chipset. Furthermore, you are getting an MIUI 14 interface based on the latest Android 13 firmware. Besides this, you can choose between a 64GB to 128GB internal storage configuration that will be accordioned by 4GB/6GB/8GB RAM support. The Redmi Note 12 4G smartphone costs around $181 (Rs 14,800 in India) approx.

Xiaomi has struck a pretty nice balance with this year's Redmi Note 12 4G. The handset has an excellent display, long battery life, sufficiently fast charging, adequate performance, the latest MIUI + Android combo (unlike its siblings) and, although largely unimpressive camera performance, it's still rather decent for the price bracket. We wish more work went toward optimizing the dedicated Night mode. We also wonder why Xiaomi removed the stereo speakers and the NFC. That last bit may be a deal-breaker for some of you who use the phone for contactless payments. For the most part, the Redmi Note 12 4G's competitors have either better performance and are considerably more expensive, or they fail to match the Redmi Note 12 4G's feature set for the same asking price. We believe that this phone will sit comfortably in the sub-€200 price bracket. If you are not satisfied with what the Redmi has to offer, we suggest increasing your budget's upper limit. That's the only way to get a better phone than this Redmi.
