Nya trick i en gammal design? Bortsett från det nya svarta färgalternativet ser Surface Pro 6 precis ut som sin föregångare. Enheten är en tunn och robust surfplatta av hög kvalitet som är lätt att hålla i och väger jämförelsevis graciösa 786 g.
Tyvärr förblir Microsoft omedgörliga när det kommer till portarna. Surface Pro 6 har samma glesa utbud som inkluderar en Mini DisplayPort, en USB Typ A-port, en microSD-kortläsare och en hörlursanslutning. Enheten saknar en USB Typ C-port, vilket känns utdaterat. Men avsaknaden blir än mer frustrerande av faktum att konkurrenterna har haft USB Typ C eller Thunderbolt 3-portar i minst två år. Det är förbryllande att Microsoft vägrar att använda denna nya standard i sina produktserier.
Core i7-modellen får bättre poäng än betydligt större modeller, trots sin ringa formfaktor. Särskilt intressant är att Surface Pro 6 fick högre poäng än den dyrare Surface Book 2 i vår Cinebench R15-loop; Surface Book 2 ligger dock också nära toppen av vår jämförelsetabell. Vidare så stryps vår testenhet betydligt mindre än sitt Core i5-syskon, i huvudsak för att den sistnämnda är fläktlös.
Batteritiden är dock mindre imponerande, då vår testenhet uppnådde i princip samma batteritid som sin föregångare. Du bör dock ändå få ut en hel arbetsdag ur Core i7-versionen av Surface Pro 6, och det finns inga andra tunna Windows-surfplattor som håller längre än åtta, nio timmar i vårt WiFi-batteritest.
Med Surface Pro 6 följer Microsoft äntligen upp sitt löfte om att skapa en surfplatta med laptop-prestanda. Designen är dock identisk och att Microsoft fortsätter att vägra USB Typ C är fortfarande frustrerande.
Microsoft säljer samma Type Covers och Pennor som förra året och äldre tillbehör kommer fortfarande fungera tillsammans med Surface Pro 6. Men vi välkomnar de till synes uppgraderade kamerorna. Skärmen är fortfarande tillräckligt ljusstark för att enheten ska kunna användas utomhus och har dessutom nästan fullständig sRGB-täckning.
Vår testenhets konfiguration kostar för tillfället 18.990 kronor på Microsofts hemsida, utan Type Cover, vilket är otroligt dyrt för en surfplatta. Men priset är inte så långt ifrån vad de flesta av våra 10 bästa omvandlingsbara kostar. Samsung Galaxy Book 12 är betydligt billigare än Surface Pro 6 och fick totalt 88%, men den drivs av den äldre och svagare processorn Intel Core i5-7200U.
Vi kommer snart även att testa ytterligare en kandidat, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen.3. Den är lika dyr som Surface Pro 6, men kommer med en stylus, två Thunderbolt 3-portar, en mer högupplöst skärm och ett LTE-modem. Den surfplattan har dessutom en större 3:2-skärm på 13 tum, men den väger runt 180 g mer än Surface. På papperet är ThinkPad X1 mer prisvärd, men huruvida det stämmer i verkligheten får vår recension avgöra, vilken kommer att publiceras inom ett par dagar.
