Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

The display backlight flickers at 25250 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 50 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.

The frequency of 25250 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8813 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz was measured.

För den tredje generationen av Lenovos ThinkPad P50-serie har man valt en försiktig utveckling snarare än en revolutionerande omdesign.

Det revolutionära steg som ThinkPad P52 utgjorde visade sig i stort vara väldigt bra då den tog med sig många av fördelarna från sina föregångare, exempelvis det riktigt rejäla och robusta höljet och de utmärkta ThinkPad-typiska inmatningsenheterna. Enhetens portutbud har moderniserats ordentligt utan att offra något av sin mångsidighet och säkerhetsfunktionerna har förbättrats med en infraröd kamera för Windows Hello och stöd för det splitter nya kameraskyddet ThinkShutter. Skärmen har förbättrats betydligt och integsskärmen är därmed äntligen ett ordentligt och skapligt alternativ. Det enda problem vi hade var att den inte helt täckte sRGB. Vidare fördelar inkluderar utökad treårig på-plats garanti som standard (begränsat till vissa länder och vissa SKU:er), den riktigt snabba PCIe NVMe SSD-enheten från Samsung och riktigt låg energiförbrukning enligt våra verklighetstrogna batteritester.

P52 kan konfigureras individuellt och kan uppgraderas retroaktivt. Vår recensionsenhet har en tom WWAN-plats, tre lediga RAM-platser och två lediga lagringsplatser. Tyvärr var det onödigt komplicerat att uppgradera P52 på grund av att det krävdes ett särskilt verktyg för att ta bort tangentbordet. Även om verktyget ska kunna beställas från Lenovo så finns det inte tillgängligt ännu. Tangentbordet behöver tas bort för att det ska gå att komma åt två av dom fyra RAM-platserna samt WWAN-platsen. Kylsystemet förblev utom räckhåll och därmed omöjligt att underhålla. I gengäld var det lättare att ta bort bottenstycket då det saknade de fruktade plastklämmorna som de flesta andra laptops har.

Det reviderade kylsystemet och P52:s totala prestanda kan bäst beskrivas som ett tveeggat svärd. Å ena sidan har CPU-prestandan ökat dramatiskt tack vare en sexkärnig Core i7-8750H CPU som presterar bättre än genomsnittet. Fläktarna höll sig jämförelsevis tysta även vid belastning och var helt avstängda vid tomgång. Som en bonus har Lenovo trots det lyckats minska yttemperaturen. Å andra sidan var kylsystemet överbelastat redan på vår instegs-SKU utrustad med Core i7-8750H och ett Quadro P1000. Detta är Intels fel lika mycket som det är Lenovos - nästan ingen laptop utrustad med sex kärnor kan utnyttja Intels senaste processorer fullt ut. Således är vi tveksamma när det gäller kraftigare SKU:er med Core i7-7700HQ och Quadro P3200.

Andra nackdelar inkluderar de dåliga högtalarna och en liten mängd spoltjut. Vi hade också föredragit en glasbeklädd styrplatta framför en med plastyta och vi förvånades över att det inte fanns något sätt att slå av CPU-strypningen som sker vid batteridrift.

Skaplig skärm, robust och rejält hölje, behagliga och bekväma inmatningsenheter, lång batteritid, utmärkt CPU-prestanda och dessutom är den tyst - Lenovos ThinkPad P52 är nästan för bra för att vara sann. Tyvärr överbelastades kylsystemet redan av vår instegs-modell.

När allt kommer omkring är ThinkPad P52 ett utmärkt val om du letar efter en kraftfull bärbar arbetsstation och inte har något emot dess vikt. Till och med den här instegsmodellen lyckades ta sig förbi gränsen för "riktigt bra" i vår ranking, särskilt tack vare dess utmärkta FHD-skärm. Äntligen en ThinkPad som inte kräver att du skaffar en dyrare modell för att få en skaplig skärm. Vi är extra nyfikna på hur P52 står sig mot sina direkta rivaler, Dells Precision 7530 och HP:s ZBook 15 G5, och ser fram emot att recensera dessa två så snart som möjligt.
