Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

HP ZBook 15u G5 verkar åtgärda en del av dom saker vi kritiserade ZBook 15u G4 för genom att sätta i en uppdaterad GPU och en kraftigare fyrkärnig CPU.

ZBook 15u G5 är baserad på EliteBook 850 G5, vilket verkligen inte är något dåligt. EliteBook 850 G5 har en del imponerande kvaliteter såsom det högkvalitativa metallhöljet och den skapliga styrplattan. HP har till och med lyckats återskapa EliteBook 850 G5:s låga yttemperaturer samt det hyfsade utbudet av portar och säkerhetsfunktioner. ZBook 15u G5 har också samma garantiperiod som EliteBook 850 G5.

På papperet är ZBook 15u G5 en kontorslaptop med en ISV-certifierad GPU. Detta kvalificerar inte ZBook 15u G5 till att bli en sann arbetsstation. ZBook 15u G5 har bara låga yttemperaturer på grund av dom konservativa temperaturbegränsningarna. Dessa begränsningar och det svaga kylsystemet kombineras och skapar såpass svag prestanda för CPU och GPU att dess Core i7-8550U presterar sämre än den svagare Core i5-8250U som sitter i EliteBook 850 G5. Dessutom misslyckas GPU:n att nå sin fulla potential då systemet värmestryper den, vilket resulterar i att dess Radeon Pro WX 3100 presterar sämre än sin föregångare i en del tester. Denna frustrerande upplevelse blir ännu värre av den irriterande högfrekventa fläkten och det fruktade spoltjutet. För att sammanfatta, ZBook 15u G5 stärker idén om att en bra arbetsstation inte kan vara baserad på designen för en kontorslaptop.

Detta är heller inte alla problem. Skärmen i vår testenhet var helt enkelt inte bra nog för en modell som kostar 17.500 kronor. Färgrymdstäckningen och ljusstyrkan var för låga för att datorn skulle kunna användas som en arbetsstation. Vi hade också förväntat oss att se en SD-kortsläsare och en bättre version av PointStick än den som används i EliteBook 850 G5; PointStick är inte på samma nivå som ThinkPad-modellernas TrackPoint. Tillslut hade vi förväntat oss minst två M.2-2280 SSD-platser i en arbetsstation på 15.6 tum snarare än den enda som ingår. En räcker gott för kontorslaptops men inte för arbetsstationer, särskilt när det finns plats för ytterligare en M.2-2280 plats.

HP ZBook 15u G5 stryps rejält vid belastning, vilket vi inte förväntar oss att se hos en enhet som marknadsförs som en arbetsstation.

För att summera så är det oklart för vem HP ZBook 15u är designad åt. Enheten misslyckas som en arbetsstation då den är underdimensionerad jämfört med andra arbetsstationer och har en skärm som är olämplig för professionellt bruk. På samma sätt är ZBook 14u G5 ett bättre val om du föredrar mobilitet men vill köpa en ZBook-modell. Till sist finns det bättre alternativ för kontorslaptops, till exempel den billigare EliteBook 850 G5.

Sammanfattningsvis kan vi inte rekommendera HP ZBook 15u G5 på grund av de avsevärda tillkortakommanden den har som arbetsstation.
