Se dubbelt. Asus vill överträffa Apples Touch Bar med den ännu galnare iden att göra om en traditionell styrplatta till en fullfjädrad sekundär 1080p-skärm. Förvånansvärt nog är den faktiskt ganska användbar och är mer än bara en nymodighet. Vi hoppas att denna unika funktion återkommer i nästa generation av Asus flaggskepps-serier när alla nackdelar har polerats bort.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

Vi kan för tillfället inte ge en övergripande bedömning av UX580 då vi fick tillgång till en förhandsutgåva och Core i9-processorn i denna enhet presterade inte som förväntat. Ett mer genomgående omdöme gällande prestandan får vänta tills vi kan testa datorn igen och bekräfta våra resultat på en andra enhet. Men vi kan ge våra slutgiltiga tankar rörande de unika funktioner som UX580 har.

Screenpad-skärmen är en innovation som kan sägas vara mer praktisk än Apples Touch Bar. Grundkonceptet, att ha en extra 1080p-skärm i 16:9-format, har många fördelar för både multimedia och produktivitet jämfört med Apples okonventionella variant. Inga speciella applikationer krävs för att Screenpad-skärmen ska vara användbar; bara att ha en extra skärm som alltid finns tillgänglig när man är i farten får oss att vilja ha en styrplatteskärm i alla modeller som finns där ute. Desktop-användare med två eller fler skärmar vet exakt hur praktiska flerskärms-upplägg kan vara i fråga om effektivitet och kan bekräfta hur svårt det är att gå tillbaka till en skärm. På så sätt har UX580 en av dom fräschaste ideerna vi sett hitills på en Windows-laptop. Vi kan inte vänta förräns dess SDK blir tillgängligt till utvecklare så att de kan dra nytta av allt en extra skärm kan erbjuda.

Även om konceptet har oanad potential så finns det ergonomiska utmaningar att komma över. Att titta upp och ner mellan dom separata skärmarna kan bli tröttsamt. Apples Touch Bar är fysiskt sett närmare huvudskärmen. Dessutom är styrplatteskärmen besvärlig att använda om ingen extern mus är ansluten då den konstant byter mellan en muspekare och tryckkänslig inmatning. Det finns en viss inlärningskurva innan Asus Screenpad blir till en självklarhet.

Till sist är en stor nackdel med Screenpad-skärmen att den har ett grynigt överdrag. Även om text blir liten på Touch Bar eller till och med på en budget-telefon med en 1080p-skärm så är texten på Screenpad-skärmen grynig och inte i närheten så skarp. Detta gäller särskilt när den används i läget för utökat skrivbord. Vi förstår att detta tjocka matta överdrag var nödvändigt för att förbättra styrplattans glidegenskaper, men det kommer på bekostnad av skärmens kvalitet. Från det perspektivet känns Screenpad-skärmen på UX580 väldigt mycket som en första generationens produkt.

På nästan alla andra sätt känns UX580 likadan som UX550 så våra existerande kommentarer gäller fortfarande. Högtalarna är ännu bättre, den är lätt att serva och aluminiumchassit är ganska starkt med samma förbehåll som innan. I framtiden hoppas vi på att se bättre batteritid och kanske en övergång till en skarpare AMOLED/OLED-skärm till dess Screenpad.
