The Surface Pro X is not a tablet meant for professionals. As long as you keep this in mind, this is a stellar tablet to use. A desktop-grade operating system on an iPad-like tablet is exactly what the WFH doctor ordered. You can do your light office work at one moment and quickly undock it to catch up with the latest Netflix show when done. The battery life is good enough and so is the 3:2 display. And, with that blessing-in-disguise kickstand, I cannot recommend any other tablet that is as comfortable to use as the Surface Pro X. In fact, I can now finally say – Yes, you can replace your laptop with a tablet. And that tablet is not an iPad; it is a Windows 11-toting Surface Pro X – a tablet that you attach your mouse and keyboard to use just like your laptop. That said, if you are seeking a proper professional tablet that can do video and photo editing with ease, you have the iPad Pro M1. If you are seeking a reliable productivity tablet, the Surface Pro 8 is worth checking out.

The Surface Pro X is Microsoft’s bet on ARM processors that might be the future of Windows laptops. The Pro X is the first step in that direction – in fact, a bold one. The Surface Pro X is exciting but also frustrating at the same time. For Microsoft with the Surface Pro X and Apple with the iPad Pro, the end goal is to create a new type of computer but both devices feel less complete than a traditional Windows laptop or a MacBook running macOS. Right now, the Surface Pro X is a bit of a complicated device but has a lot of potential in the future. The success of a device like the Pro X is tied to how developers react to the ARM platform on Windows. Until that happens, I’d recommend you to get a Surface Pro 8 which has the same design as the Pro X but comes with an Intel processor inside.

Overall, I recommend the Surface Pro X to those that live in the browser, or in other words, have the majority of their workflow based within web apps. The Surface Pro X is great for that, but if you're looking for a more well-rounded device, you're better off looking elsewhere. Considering the Surface Pro X is $1600 and doesn't include its main accessories, Apple's M1 Macs still offer the best value for ulta-portable all-round performance.

What problems I had with the original Surface Pro X still remains on the new model, just to a lesser degree. App compatibility will be a problem for some users, although there is light at the end of the tunnel. More pressingly, the SQ2 chip in the Surface Pro X can't compete with Intel equivalents, and Apple's M1 in the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro simply does ARM better.

The Surface Pro X (2020) with an SQ2 processor is available starting at $2,079 in Canada with 256GB of storage and 16GB of RAM. The Pro X (2019) with the SQ1 is also still available, starting at $1,349 for 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. However, keep in mind that the storage is upgradeable in the Pro X line and that the Signature Keyboard and Surface Slim Pen are sold separately. The Signature Keyboard costs $189.99 and the Slim Pen is $199.99. There’s a bundle with both for $369.99. Either way, it’s a lot of extra money on top of the already expensive Pro X (2020).
