We don’t want to be dramatic, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro is fine, it does a good enough job, but at this price point, “fine” and “good enough” just simply don’t cut the mustard. While we understand the reason 5G is absent here, we can’t simply ignore its omission and wave it off. The chipset’s performance is fine, but again, newer phones in the same price point are going to out run the Mate 50 Pro. The battery, charging, display and camera are impressive, but there are many other manufacturers who can match that performance without the downsides Huawei brings with it. All of this means that Huawei’s latest flagship is not worth the R24 999 price tag. It’s a shame that the US upended Huawei the way it did, but until this handset, it felt as if the firm was trying its best to make do with the cards it had been dealt. The Mate 50 Pro, however, is lacking in too many areas to warrant a recommendation. We simply can’t recommend this handset and would instead point readers to our review of the latest Samsung Galaxy S23

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro’s overall battery score was average. The phone’s autonomy was poor, delivering just over a day and half of power when used moderately. The Mate 50 Pro was also quite power hungry at night, when at activity is generally low, losing on average 4% per night. The device’s battery also would just collapse when reaching 3%. When testing use cases individually and outdoors, the Mate 50 Pro’s autonomy was below average for all use cases, except gaming, where the results were above average. The Mate 50 Pro’s charging experience was excellent. The 66W wired charger took only 46 minutes to fill up the 4700 mAh battery. Similarly, the wireless stand took 1 hour and 26 minutes to fully charge the battery, which was much faster than average. The residual consumption levels of the wired charger and of the wireless charger when the device was unplugged were above average. The device’s efficiency results varied a bit depending on the charging method. The wireless charge efficiency was excellent, but wired efficiency was average. The Mate 50 Pro’s discharge currents were high overall, meaning that the device is not well optimized, except for gaming. When compared with devices from the Ultra-Premium price range ($800+), the Huawei Mate 50 Pro is just below average. Its autonomy, as well as its efficiency score were below average. But it showed excellent results in terms of charge, placing it among the best charging performances of its segment.

Except for the device’s fixed-focus front camera, the Mate 50 Pro comes with most of the same hardware specifications as the Huawei P50 Pro. Despite the hardware similarities, the Mate 50 Pro’s performance was an improvement over the P50 Pro thanks to new software solutions and refined tuning, For video, the Mate 50 Pro was tested at 4K resolution at 30 frames per second, with Vivid HDR mode enabled. Vivid HDR is a new HDR video format and currently supported by a range of phones and TVs. In our tests the Mate 50 Pro delivered a very consistent still image performance, achieving top scores in several test categories, including exposure, focus, noise and flash. This said, overall the Huawei Mate 50 Pro video results were good but not outstanding, mainly due to slightly low contrast levels and a low light performance that left some room for improvement.

Yet we all know that there's a big BUT to the whole thing. It's not that Google Mobile Services and 5G connectivity are impossible to live without. Huawei's AppGallery and alternative app repositories have gone a long way in the past few years, while 5G is yet to really become a game changer for most of our daily lives. Huawei being the black sheep of the smartphone market means the Mate 50 Pro doesn't stand a chance of selling millions of units in Europe. Some users willing to steer away from Google will be glad that it's available, but most will just ignore it. But it's a lovely phone and another proof that Huawei's well of innovation is far from drying. If nothing else it will serve as a well-design publicity stunt that will increase user confidence in the company's other products - wearables, TWS earphones and laptops, which are far better positioned to become best-sellers.

With a DXOMARK Camera score of 149, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro is the new No. 1 in our smartphone camera ranking. It also achieved the best Photo score to date, thanks to excellent results in the exposure, focus, and texture/noise categories. The autofocus score benefited a lot from the new and innovative adjustable aperture, which allows for the optimization of the depth of field in a scene. An adjustable aperture is especially useful, for example, in group portraits. As smartphone image sensors have become bigger, the effect has been a reduced depth of field, which makes it more difficult to keep all subjects in focus if they are not in the same focus plane. The Huawei system uses an embedded diaphragm that allows for adjustment from f/1.4 to f/4.0, so, depending on the scene, the camera can either prioritize light capture (in low light), maximize depth of field, or pick a more balanced setting between the two extremes. We last saw a similar feature on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 series with its duo aperture, but it’s still quite uncommon, and the Samsung feature does not lead to the same results.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro was announced in September 2022, and the expected price of this phone would be $1262 (Rs 102,990 in India) approx. As for the primary specs, let’s start with the display that renders a big 6.74 inches OLED panel with 1B colors, 120Hz refresh rate support, and Huawei Kunlun glass protection. Under the hood, it is powered by the 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ 4G Gen 1 processor and comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB to 512GB of internal storage. The phone runs on the EMUI 13 OS for the international variant and HarmonyOS 3.0 OS for the china variant. For the next level of photography and videography, there is a triple rear camera setup with a 50MP main, 13MP ultrawide, and a 64MP periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom support. Qualcomm Adreno 730:

Grafikkrets för smartphones och surfplattor som är integrerad i Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. Qualcomm hävdar att det är 30 % snabbare än Adreno 660 i Snapdragon 888 SoC. För Android bör det vara ett av de snabbaste grafikkorten i slutet av 2021.

Det här är mindre avancerade grafikkort för användare som ändå vill kunna spela spel. Nya spel bör vara spelbara, men ofta bara med låga detaljinställningar och låg upplösning. Eftersom moderna grafikkort i den här klassen har låg strömförbrukning kan även batteritiden vara bra.

SD 8+ Gen 1:

Högkvalitativ SoC för smartphones som introducerades i slutet av 2021 och tillverkades i 4 nm hos TSMC. Integrerar en "Prime Core" baserad på en ARM Cortex-X2-arkitektur som klockas upp till 3,2 GHz. Tre ytterligare prestandakärnor är baserade på A710 men klockar upp till 2,5 GHz. Dessutom integreras fyra energisparande kärnor som är baserade på ARM Cortex-A510-arkitekturen och klockar upp till 1,8 GHz. Förutom processorkärnorna integrerar SoC:n ett WiFi 6e-modem, en Hexagon DSP (för AI-acceleration) och en Spectra ISP. Den integrerade minneskontrollern stöder snabbt LPDDR5-minne med upp till 3 200 MHz. 5G ingår nu i chipet med Snapdragon X65-modemet. Jämfört med non plus-versionen erbjuder 8+ Gen 1 en 200 MHz högre klockad Prime Core och en 10 % högre klockad GPU. Dessutom tillverkas den nu hos TSMC och inte hos Samsung.
