Medion Erazer Beast X40 recension: Gaming notebook med RTX 4090

Översyn. Gå stort, inte gå hem: Med Core i9-13900HX och GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop har Medion gett den här bärbara datorn den senaste och mest kraftfulla hårdvaran som finns tillgänglig just nu. Enheten har också en snabb 16:10-skärm (2 560 x 1 600), ett mekaniskt tangentbord och en ganska bra batteritid.

Även om den hör till kategorin bärbara datorer för spel är Erazer Beast X40 också avsedd för andra mycket krävande användningsscenarier. Den nödvändiga datorprestandan tillhandahålls av en Raptor Lake CPU och en Ada Lovelace GPU. Jämfört med sina föregångare har den bärbara datorn fått en stor översyn: Medion har gett den ett nytt bildskärmsformat (16:10 i stället för 16:9), ett kylsystem med vattenkylning som tillval och ett mekaniskt tangentbord.

X40 bygger på en Tongfang barebone (GM7PX9N) som i stort sett är identisk med den som användes för XMG Neo 17. Den konkurrerar med liknande produkter som MSI Titan GT77 HX 13VI, Alienware x17 R2 P48E, Razer Blade 16 (början av 2023)och Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 2023 G834JY.

Hölje - Erazer har ett metallchassi

Erazer Beast X40 undviker en högljudd och flashig look till förmån för en dämpad design som inte skulle sticka ut i en professionell miljö. Precis som sina föregångare använder X40 ett svart metallchassi med matt finish. Basdelen är täckt av en greppvänlig gummibeläggning. Tangentbordets bakgrundsbelysning (RGB) samt två fullt konfigurerbara LED-remsor (RGB) ovanför de bakre utblåsningsventilerna ger den bärbara datorn en färgklick. Batteriet, som är fastskruvat i stället för fastlimmat, och resten av de inre delarna är tillgängliga när det nedre locket har tagits bort.

Vi märkte inga problem med tillverkningen på vår recensionsenhet. Luckorna i chassit är fina och täta och det finns inga överskottsmaterial kvar från tillverkningsprocessen. Det är praktiskt taget omöjligt att vrida basdelen. Locket kan böjas något, men mängden eftergift är fullt acceptabel. Gångjärnen håller skärmen stadigt på plats och gör att skärmen kan vikas tillbaka i upp till ungefär 140 grader. Den bärbara datorns lock kan inte öppnas med en hand.

Medion Erazer Beast X40 är en av de mest kompakta enheterna i vår jämförelse och ligger någonstans i mitten när det gäller vikt.

Specifikationer - Thunderbolt 4 för odjuret

Erazer har tre USB-A-portar (2x USB 3.2 Gen 1, 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2) och en USB-C-port (Thunderbolt 4) ombord. Den sistnämnda har inte stöd för Power Delivery men kan ge ut DisplayPort-signaler. Den bärbara datorn har totalt två videoutgångar (HDMI 2.1, DP), två ljuduttag (headset och mic-in), en Gigabit Ethernet-port och en Kensington-plats. På baksidan hittar du även kontakter för den valfria vattenkylningslösningen.

Anslutningsmöjligheter

Under optimala förhållanden (inga andra Wi-Fi-enheter i omedelbar närhet, kort avstånd mellan den bärbara datorn och serverdatorn) levererade Erazer utmärkta överföringshastigheter via Wi-Fi eftersom Medion har valt att använda en Intel AX211 Wi-Fi 6E-modul. Trådbundna nätverksanslutningar hanteras av Realtek RTL8125 Gigabit Ethernet-chipet, som klarar hastigheter på upp till 2,5 Gbit/s.

Tillbehör

Den bärbara datorn levereras utan andra tillbehör än den vanliga dokumentationen och en nätadapter. Medion erbjuder en extern vattenkylningslösning som tillval till ett pris av cirka 250 euro (270 dollar), som företaget också tillhandahöll oss för testning.

Den lilla kylningsenheten är ganska enkel att använda: fyll den helt enkelt med destillerat vatten, anslut kablarna och slangarna och sätt på den. Den bärbara datorn och den externa kylenheten kommunicerar med varandra via Bluetooth, och anslutningen upprättas automatiskt. Den bärbara datorns laddare förser både X40 och kylenheten med ström. Vattenrören hålls på plats magnetiskt - inga skruvar behöver dras åt. Några droppar vatten kan dock läcka ut när du kopplar bort rören.

Underhåll

För att ta bort bottenskyddet måste du lossa alla skruvar på undersidan samt ytterligare två skruvar på baksidan bredvid vattenkylningskontakterna. Därefter kan bottenlocket dras av i en skarp rörelse vid utblåsningsventilerna. När du tar bort locket får du tillgång till minnesplatserna (båda används), två PCIe 4.0 SSD-enheter, Wi-Fi-modulen, fläktarna, BIOS-batteriet och det uppladdningsbara batteriet.

Garanti

Medion ger två års garanti på Erazer. Uppgraderingsalternativ finns tillgängliga, men de måste köpas tillsammans med den bärbara datorn i Medions webbutik. Du kan inte uppgradera eller förlänga garantin efter att du har köpt den bärbara datorn. Det kostar nästan 200 euro (216 dollar) att förlänga garantin med ett år.

Inmatningsenheter - Mekaniskt tangentbord med Cherry MX-switchar

Tangentbord

Mekaniska tangentbord är allmänt kända för sina exakta inmatningar och återkopplingar samt sin förstklassiga skrivkänsla - detta är inte annorlunda med X40:s tangentbord. Dess Cherry MX-switchar erbjuder en måttlig rörelse och en hörbar och taktil aktiveringspunkt. Tangentbordet böjs inte när du skriver. Det finns två funktionstangenter så att du kan justera RGB-belysningen per tangent till en av de fyra ljusstyrkorna. På det hela taget har Erazer Beast X40 ett i alla avseenden fantastiskt tangentbord.

Pekplatta

Multitouch-klickplattan mäter ca 15,5 x 10 cm (6,1 x 3,9") och har en slät yta som gör att du enkelt kan glida över med fingrarna. Den erbjuder en kort resa och en tydlig klickpunkt. Det finns statusljusdioder i de övre hörnen av plattan. Genom att trycka på den vänstra lysdioden aktiveras eller inaktiveras hela pekplattan, medan den högra lysdioden används för att aktivera eller inaktivera endast den högra halvan av plattan.

Skärm - QHD+ med 16:10 bildförhållande

Den 17-tums matta IPS-skärmen (2 560 x 1 440) har ett bildförhållande på 16:10 och utmärker sig med tillräcklig ljusstyrka, snabb responstid, hög uppdateringsfrekvens (240 Hz) och avsaknad av PWM-flimmer. Men dess kontrastförhållande är inte tillräckligt bra (>1 000:1).

Panelen har stöd för G-Sync, en teknik som hjälper skärmens uppdateringsfrekvens att dynamiskt anpassa sig till den bildfrekvens som GPU:n matar ut. Detta är utformat för att ge en jämnare visningsupplevelse, särskilt när du spelar.

Skärmen har redan från början en fantastisk färgåtergivning. Den genomsnittliga färgskillnaden på cirka 2 är betydligt lägre än tröskeln för vad som anses vara bra (Delta E < 3). Kalibrering av skärmen minskade den genomsnittliga färgskillnaden till 0,74 och gjorde gråskalan mer balanserad. Panelen kan täcka hela sRGB-färgrymden, men inte AdobeRGB och DCI-P3. Skärmarna på några av de konkurrerande bärbara datorerna presterar bättre när det gäller färgtäckning.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

Föreställning - Raptor Lake möter Ada Lovelace

Även om Erazer Beast X40 i första hand är utformad för QHD+-spel, gör den också bra ifrån sig i tillämpningar som videoredigering och rendering. De nödvändiga datormusklerna tillhandahålls av Raptor Lake och Ada Lovelace. X40-modellen i den här recensionen kan köpas för cirka 4 500 euro (4 856 dollar). Men Medion erbjuder även en något lägre specificerad konfiguration (RTX 4080 och 1 TB SSD; i övrigt identisk) för 3 500 euro (3 777 USD).

Provningsvillkor

Det finns tre tillverkarspecifika prestandalägen: Office, Balance och Turbo. Vi använde Turbo-läget för benchmarking och Office-läget för våra batteritidstester och aktiverade Nvidia Optimus i båda fallen. Efter att ha genomfört dessa tester körde vi fler benchmarks med dGPU-läget aktiverat och den externa vattenkylaren ansluten. Du kan hitta resultaten av dessa ytterligare tester i jämförelsetabellen, men de tas inte i beaktande för betygsättningen.

Användare kan växla mellan de tre lägena med hjälp av en dedikerad knapp precis bredvid strömknappen. En statuslysdiod visar vilket läge som för närvarande är aktiverat. Anpassade profiler kan också skapas med hjälp av den förinstallerade Control Center-programvaran. Du kan till exempel ange CPU:s effektgränser, GPU:s TGP, temperaturgränser och så vidare.

Obs: Vi använde det engelska användargränssnittet i Control Center-programvaran eftersom det finns vissa problem med den tyska översättningen. I programvaran kan du växla mellan de två språken.

Processor

Core i9-13900HX (Raptor Lake) består av åtta prestandakärnor (Hyper-Threading, 2,2-5,4 GHz) och sexton effektivitetskärnor (ingen Hyper-Threading, 1,6-3,9 GHz), vilket ger totalt 40 logiska kärnor. De resultat som erhållits i benchmarken är något högre än vad processorn i genomsnitt kan producera.

Med Erazer Beast X40 inkopplad körde dess CPU Cinebench R15 vid höga till maximala klockfrekvenser. På batteridrift var enkeltrådsprestandan endast marginellt lägre (poäng: 228), medan flertrådsprestandan tog en rejäl smäll (poäng: 1 154). Att köra Cinebench 15 i en slinga visade att processorn kan köra konstant med höga boosthastigheter när den är på nätström.

Användningen av vattenkylningsenheten medförde ingen dramatisk ökning av prestandan. Trots detta var CPU:ns prestanda stabilare vid ihållande belastning med flera trådar (CB15-slinga), och den genomsnittliga CPU-temperaturen sjönk med cirka 5 °C (9 °F).

Medion utrustade vår X40-granskningsenhet med två 1 TB SSD-diskar (PCIe 4.0, M.2-2280) från Phison. En av dem fungerar som systemenhet och den andra används för datalagring. SSD-enheterna bildar inte bara ingen RAID-konfiguration, utan den bärbara datorn i sig stöder inte heller RAID. De medföljande enheterna är inte bland de bästa SSD-enheterna på marknaden. Trots det levererar de fortfarande bra prestanda. En annan positiv sak att nämna är att vi inte märkte några prestandaförluster orsakade av termisk strypning.

GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop är Nvidias nuvarande flaggskepp för mobila grafikprocessorer. Den har 9 728 skuggningsenheter, en 256-bitars minnesbuss och 16 384 MB höghastighets-GDDR6-minne. RTX 4090 har upp till 175 watt TGP till sitt förfogande (150 watt + 25 watt Dynamic Boost) - det är så högt det går. Men TGP utnyttjades inte fullt ut under vårt test på Witcher 3

.


Benchmarkresultaten är i nivå med (Optimus-läge) eller något bättre än (dGPU-läge) vad vi hittills har sett från RTX 4090 Laptop i genomsnitt. Den bärbara datorn har också stöd för Advanced Optimus. För att växla mellan dGPU- och Optimus-läge krävs ingen omstart av datorn.

Den valfria vattenkylningen kan ge en liten prestandaförbättring i vissa benchmarks och spel. Witcher 3, till exempel, kördes med högre bildfrekvens under vår testning. Den genomsnittliga GPU-temperaturen var också lägre än när endast luftkylning användes.

Utsläpp - Erazers bärbara dator kan vara ganska bullrig

Bullerutsläpp

Den bärbara datorn är relativt tyst vid daglig användning (t.ex. kontorsprogram, webbsurfning). Fläktarna kan till och med sluta snurra då och då. Föga förvånande kan X40 bli ganska högljudd vid hög belastning, och producerar så mycket som 53 dB(A) ljud under stresstestet och Witcher 3 -testet. Trots de ganska höga ljudnivåerna är ljudet som produceras av de två fläktarna tolererbart som helhet: ett susande ljud åtföljs av ett ljudligt surrande som gradvis övergår till ett lätt visslande med ökande fläkthastighet.

Den bärbara datorns fläktar avtar när den externa vattenkylarenheten är ansluten. Själva enheten bidrar dock också till det totala ljudet: även om pumpen är relativt tyst när den används gör fläkten inuti kylaren mer oväsen. Allt som allt tycker vi att det totala ljudet är behagligare när vattenkylningsenheten används.

Stresstest

För stresstestet lät vi Prime95 och FurMark köras under en längre tid. Det utgör ett extremt scenario som är utformat för att utvärdera hur stabilt systemet är under full belastning. CPU:n började med höga klockfrekvenser (P-kärnor: 4 GHz, E-kärnor: 3,3 GHz) medan GPU:n fluktuerade mellan 1 och 1,5 GHz. Efter ungefär fem minuter sjönk CPU:s P-kärnor och E-kärnor gradvis till 2 GHz respektive 1,8 GHz, men GPU:s klockfrekvens steg till cirka 2,3-2,4 GHz

Batteriets livslängd

Den bärbara 17-tumsdatorn klarade 6 timmar 22 minuter respektive 6 timmar 56 minuter i Wi-Fi-testet (åtkomst till webbplatser automatiskt med hjälp av ett skript) och videotestet (looping av kortfilmen Big Buck Bunny, kodad i H.264, i Full HD). För båda testerna var alla energisparfunktioner inaktiverade på den bärbara datorn och skärmens ljusstyrka var inställd på cirka 150 cd/m². Den trådlösa adaptern var också avaktiverad när vi utförde videotestet.

Medion Erazer Beast X40 är en bärbar dator som är utformad för mycket krävande användningssituationer, t.ex. videoredigering, rendering och spel. Den datormassa som krävs för dessa tillämpningar tillhandahålls av en av de mest kraftfulla CPU-GPU-kombinationerna just nu: en Core i9-13900HX i kombination med en GeForce RTX 4090.

Processorn och grafikkortet kan köras konsekvent med höga klockfrekvenser, och X40 producerar en ganska normal mängd värme och buller för den här klassen av enheter.

På det hela taget är Erazer Beast X40 en övertygande bärbar dator för spel och andra krävande tillämpningar.

Den matta 17-tums 16:10-skärmen (QHD, IPS, 240 Hz, G-Sync, sRGB) på 17 tum ser bra ut för det mesta. Den enda nackdelen är att dess kontrast är något för låg. Det fantastiska mekaniska tangentbordet (med RGB-belysning) gör att den bärbara datorn ser ännu mer attraktiv ut. De som aldrig har använt ett mekaniskt tangentbord tidigare får en ny skrivupplevelse. Thunderbolt 4-porten på den bärbara datorn öppnar upp för expansionsmöjligheter (t.ex. extern GPU, dockningslösning) men stöder inte Power Delivery.

Ett möjligt alternativ till Erazer Beast X40 är den Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 2023 G834JY. Asus ROG sticker ut med sin 18-tums 16:10 QHD+-panel i 16:10-format, mer RAM-minne (64 GB) och RAID-stöd. Med en prisnivå på cirka 4 800 euro (5 177 USD) ligger den i samma prisklass som Beast. Om pengar inte är något problem kan du ta en titt påMSI Titan GT77 HX 13V som ett annat alternativ. Det erbjuder något högre CPU-prestanda, tre SSD-platser, RAID-stöd och fyra RAM-platser. Den exceptionellt ljusstarka mini-LED-skärmen med utmärkt kontrast är en höjdpunkt på enheten. Men det totala paketet kommer att kosta dig omkring 6 600 euro (7 120 dollar).

Domen om vattenkylning

Den valfria vattenkylningsenheten gör i grunden det den ska: förbättrar prestandan (Medion lovar upp till 10 % ökning) och minskar värme och buller. Vid faktisk användning är dock prestandaförbättringen ganska blygsam, och den bärbara datorn är begränsad till en stationär plats. De enda fördelar som återstår är lägre temperaturer och bullernivåer. Det är upp till varje X40-ägare att avgöra om dessa fördelar är värda de extra 250 euro (270 US-dollar).

I Tyskland finns den granskade konfigurationen av Medion Erazer Beast X40 tillgänglig på Saturn.de och har ett pris på 4 499 euro (4 856 USD).
