The improvements aren’t revolutionary, but they hit the right spots: the telephoto camera is now among the best on the market in low light, the AI integration with Gemini works far better than before, and the 4320Hz PWM dimming of the screen is a real plus for anyone who uses their phone for many hours a day. The €1,300 price tag is high, but it’s still slightly cheaper than the competition from Samsung and Apple. And unlike its predecessor, the Magic8 Pro no longer feels like a compromise – the Chinese smartphone is a real alternative to the Galaxy S25 Ultra and iPhone 17 Pro. There are still bumps in the road. MagicOS 10 takes some getting used to, especially when it comes to notifications and background apps.

It boasts some of the best performance in the business, a well-rounded (if unoriginal-looking) user experience, with a strong focus on AI, and an improved camera system that addresses some of its predecessor's notable shortcomings (rather than simply just cramming in new features). I still don't think Honor's strides in new AI functionality are industry-defining, even if some add genuine utility. MagicOS also remains a decidedly unoriginal redressing of Android, which offers a confusing blend of polished and unoptimised tools. However, the company's willingness to extend software support, plus the phone's long-lasting, fast-charging battery, help to up its value proposition over previous entries in the series. But for UK/EU buyers, it's still a shame we're not getting the absolute best hardware version of this device.

You can now buy a flagship phone from all the brands, and you really do have to do something really impressive to stand out, as they’re all capable of giving you extremely good photos, and with strong integration with Google AI features on Android phones.

In my humble opinion, the Magic8 Pro has a better camera system than the best iPhone. It’s also objectively on level-pegging terms when it comes to performance, and the battery is far more convenient thanks to that fast charging. It can also slot fairly seamlessly into your Apple ecosystem, and even plays nicely with iPhones. The problem? It’s the Magic8 Lite. It’s cheaper, has an even bigger battery, and some wild robustness claims (I fired a staple directly into its display during the press briefing, and there wasn’t a mark on it afterwards). It’ll be enough for most people and is probably the only Achilles heel for the Magic8 Pro.

One thing that I love (again) about this phone is the face unlock. It is unlike anything I have previously used. HONOR says in its documentation that it uses 3D Face Recognition, and it really shows. When I pick the phone up, it immediately unlocks, so I only have to swipe from the lock screen. I literally cannot fault it. It seems like it does not require you to point your face to the screen at all for it to recognize you and unlock; it is just super fast. The same can be said of the fingerprint sensor; it is quick. Time will tell if MagicOS 10 slows to a crawl. I think OS slowdowns affect all handsets;

I was very impressed by the Honor Magic8 Pro's battery life. With its 7,100mAh battery, this phone can last around 1.5 days on average for my usage. In fact, I often end the day with over 50% battery. In PCMark's battery test, the Honor scored 12hr 49min, which is excellent, and quite a bit longer than the Vivo X300 (11hr 58min). If you're looking for a flagship smartphone that's more affordable than the ones from Apple or Samsung, while offering similar and sometimes even better performance, especially for battery life and photography, the Honor Magic8 Pro should be on your shortlist. It's one of several impressive flagship devices from the Chinese brands, and starts at a competitive price of S$1,499 for the base 12GB+512GB model (S$1,699 for the 16GB+1TB model).
