The Alienware m17 really impressed my with how lightweight and easy it was to carry around, while offering a generous 17.3" screen, and stellar performance – all for £2,349. The screen looks fantastic and you'll be able to run AAA titles at max settings without compromise. The only downside is the noise if the fans when they inevitably kick in and the too-hot-to-handle temperature, but as long as you have a pair of headphones and somewhere other than your lap to rest it, it's not too much of a problem. If size matters - even on the go - you can't go wrong with the Alienware m17 and it won't break the bank.

Alienware put a whole lotta laptop into a relatively slim, lightweight package. The m17 comes out of the box swinging with an overclockable Intel Core i9 processor and an Nvidia RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU, which all but guarantees the system will be a powerhouse. Impressive battery life (for a gaming laptop) and a speedy SSD only sweeten the pot, while Alienware's new showstopping Legend design is an emphatic nod to the future. However, $3,579 for our test configuration can make even the most avid gamer pause. To get the most bang for your buck, we recommend opting for the $2,199 config, which gets you a 9th Gen Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and a powerful RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU. The $2,999 MSI GS75 Stealth is a slightly more affordable option that's lighter and slimmer than the m17 and has a more vivid display and similar specs. But if you want the very best power and performance, the Alienware m17 is the clear choice.

While the Alienware M17 is relatively man-portable as gaming notebooks go, it alas doesn’t quite resolve the age-old conundrum of middling battery life as all that high-end hardware tends to drain juice fast. If you’re gaming away from the mains, you’ll average less than 3 hours of practical use before you need to find a power plug, making it more appropriate as a gaming desktop replacement.

The Alienware m17 isn't the only laptop fueled by Nvidia's new RTX 20-series. If you're after serious gaming power, you have some options. At this point, there's no clear winner and the "best" laptop will depend on what features are of particular importance to you. With that said, the m17 is a safe bet: It's a powerhouse, its got an inoffensive look and it doesn't make any galling design sacrifices to cram all those premium components into a small(ish) body.

But gamers looking to save some money can get the MSI GS75 Stealth for $1,000 less and still get a machine that's lighter, with a brighter display and faster SSD. However, you lose out on the high-powered CPU and 4K display. Ultimately, the Alienware m17 is a great choice for gamers who want serious power in a reasonably slim chassis.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q:

De här grafikkorten bör klara av alla nuvarande spel med acceptabel bildfrekvens, men inte nödvändigtvis med höga inställningar. Särskilt krävande spel kanske bara fungerar med låga inställningar. Till skillnad från prestandakorten hittar man däremot de här grafikkorten i bärbara datorer av lite mindre format med bättre batteritid.
