Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition Review: Oöverträffad 4K 100 fps gigant för 400 dollar mindre än RTX 3090 Ti

Ett kärlek(spets)likt odjur utan motstycke. RTX 4090 är en flaggskeppsmodell baserad på Nvidias nya AD102 Ada Lovelace-arkitektur. Även om grunderna liknar Ampere, erbjuder Nvidia förstärkta klockor och kärnor, ny Tensor- och RT-kärnteknik och en effektiv TSMC-anpassad 4N-process, som alla syftar till att göra RTX 4090 till den obestridda ledaren i kartan under lång tid framöver. Vi har satt RTX 4090 på prov för att se exakt hur mycket hästkrafter du kan få för 1 599 dollar.

När den första rykten om en ny Nvidia GPU baserad på Ada Lovelace-arkitekturen kom upp i slutet av 2020 var de påstådda specifikationerna inget annat än häpnadsväckande. I dag är RTX 4090 tillgänglig i köttet för 1 599 US-dollar MSRP och är så imponerande som en konsument-GPU kan bli.

RTX 4090:s AD102 GPU har 16 384 CUDA-kärnor, 512 fjärde generationens Tensor-kärnor och 128 tredje generationens RT-kärnor. Detta är en nedskärning från det kompletta AD102-silikonet, som har 18 432 CUDA-kärnor, 568 Tensor-kärnor och 142 RT-kärnor. Det är alltså självklart att vi snart kan förvänta oss en "RTX 4090 Ti" av ett slag under de kommande månaderna.

Ett Ada-grafikprocessorkluster (GPC) innehåller en rastermotor, sex texturprocessorkluster (TPC), 12 strömmande multiprocessorer (SM) och 16 rasteroperationspipelines (ROP).

Varje SM har i sin tur 128 CUDA-kärnor, en RT-kärna, fyra sensorkärnor, fyra texturenheter, ett register på 256 KB och 128 KB konfigurerbar L1-cache.

I den här recensionen tar vi en ordentlig titt på Ada-flaggskeppet, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition, och ser hur mycket den nya arkitekturen ger i prestanda jämfört med Ampere och AMD RDNA 2-flaggskeppen.

Även om det inte är ett komplett chip innehåller den nuvarande AD102-dien i RTX 4090 76,3 miljarder transistorer - en ökning av antalet transistorer med nästan 170 % jämfört med RTX 4090 RTX 3090 Ti - samtidigt som man lyckats göra die:n 3 % mindre på 608,5 mm2. AD102 är faktiskt baserad på TSMC:s N5-process, men Nvidia betecknar den som "4N" vilket indikerar egna anpassningar.

RTX 4090 FE ser vid första anblicken enormt stor ut, men enligt mätningarna ligger den mer eller mindre på samma nivå som RTX 4090 FE RTX 3090 FE. 4090 FE har en större tjocklek (61 mm jämfört med 57 mm för RTX 3090 FE) medan RTX 3090 FE faktiskt är längre, 313 mm jämfört med 304 mm för 4090 FE.

RTX 4090 FE är något längre än ett E-ATX-moderkort och kommer att ta upp utrymmet för tre PCIe-kortplatser, så du måste ta hänsyn till detta vid köpet. Vi rekommenderar att du har tillräckligt med utrymme mellan kortet och de främre fläktarna för att få ett optimalt luftflöde i höljet.

Bortsett från måtten finns det inte många estetiska skillnader jämfört med vad vi redan har sett med RTX 3090 FE. Designen är enkel, diskret men ändå extremt funktionell.

Det termiska delsystemet har samma utseende och funktionalitet som den tidigare generationen - en fläkt suger luft underifrån medan den andra suger luften från kortet och trycker den i motsatt ände, vanligtvis mot toppen av höljet. Detta innebär att om du placerar kortet konventionellt bör radiatorfläktarna eller "pull"-avgasfläktarna vara idealiskt placerade på toppen av ditt hölje för att förhindra potentiell värmeuppbyggnad.

Anslutningsmöjligheterna är desamma som vi har sett tidigare med Ampere-kort, men NVLink-kontakten som tidigare erbjöds med RTX 3090- och RTX 3090 Ti-kortet har nu tagits bort. Det finns tre DisplayPort 1.4a-utgångar och en HDMI 2.1a-port.

Nvidia anser att marknaden ännu inte är mogen för DisplayPort 2.1 medan den kommande AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT och RX 7900 XTXrDNA 3-kort redan skryter om att de har DisplayPort 2.1 med stöd för UHBR 13.5.

Turingkorten erbjöd USB Type-C-stöd redan tidigare, men Nvidia tog bort denna port med Ampere. Även om det inte riktigt är en dealbreaker kommer AMD:s kommande RDNA 3-kort å andra sidan att erbjuda USB Type-C för direkt anslutning av VR-headsets och USB-C-skärmar.

Nvidia introducerade PCIe Gen 5 strömkontakten för första gången med RTX 3090 Ti och krävde att den skulle ingå även i partnermodeller för tilläggskort (AiB). I år har PCIe Gen 5-kontakten, kallad 12VHPWR-adaptern, fått mycket kritik från https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/ydh1mh/16_pins_adapter_megathread/på grund av det ökande antalet smältningsrapporter.

Både de första användarna och de potentiella köparna är oroliga för riskerna med en smältande strömkontakt som kan dra 600 W under belastning.

Nvidia har nu bekräftat att man aktivt undersöker problemet och säger att problemet kan uppstå om kontakten inte är ordentligt inkopplad. Företaget har dock sagt att det kommer att stödja alla berörda kunder och påskynda RMA-processen.

Vi hade inget ATX 3 nätaggregat eller modifierade kablar till hands, så vi fick nöja oss med den medföljande adaptern 12VHPWR 16-pin till 4x 8-pin.

Lyckligtvis verkar kontakten i vårt recensionsexemplar fortfarande intakt även efter många timmars kontinuerligt spelande, stresstester och överklockning.

Om du nöjer dig med att köra RTX 4090 på 450 W kan du tekniskt sett nöja dig med endast 3 x 8-poliga anslutningar till ditt nätaggregat. Du behöver bara den fjärde 8-stiftaren om du planerar att överklocka eller öka kortets effektmål.

Känselpinnarna i 12VHPWR hjälper till att tala om för GPU:n hur många 8-pinnar som är anslutna för att justera effekten på motsvarande sätt. Allt mindre än tre 8-stiftsanslutningar och kortet kommer inte att starta upp

RTX 4090 FE har en basklocka på 2 235 MHz och kan öka upp till 2 520 MHz i standardprofilen för ström och spänning. Det är möjligt att öka effektmålet med ytterligare 33 % till 600 W.

Testbänken: Core i9-13900K möter RTX 4090 FE

För att RTX 4090 ska kunna visa sina muskler fullt ut behöver du en modern processor av typen AMD Zen 4 eller Intel Alder Lake/Raptor Lake-processorer - deAMD Ryzen 9 7900X/7950X ellerIntel Core i9-13900Kär värdiga följeslagare till RTX 4090.

Ryzen 7 5800X3D kan också vara ett bra alternativ om du vill hålla dig till AM4-plattformen tills vidare. Andra AM4-processorer, inklusive Ryzen 9 5950X, kan allvarligt flaskhalsa RTX 4090, särskilt vid upplösningar under QHD.

I våra inledande tester med Ryzen 9 5950X fann vi att RTX 4090:s prestanda vid 1080p var så flaskhalsad att vissa resultat vid olika inställningar denna upplösning ofta inte skiljde sig så mycket från ett RTX 3090 Ti. Därför förlitar sig den aktuella granskningen på en Core i9-13900K-plattform.

En ny installation av Windows 11 22H2 med de senaste patcherna användes tillsammans med Game Ready-drivrutinen version 526.47.

Syntetiska riktmärken: En slam dunk för RTX 4090

När vi kombinerar alla syntetiska benchmarks tillsammans finner vi att RTX 4090 FE har en betydande ledning på 51 % jämfört med RTX 3090 Ti och 58 % jämfört med RTX 3090 FE och även med Radeon RX 6950 XT.

Radeon RX 6950 XT har en märkbar fördel över RTX 3090 Ti i syntetiska 3DMark-grafiktester. Det återstår att se hur de nya RDNA 3-korten skulle klara sig när de blir tillgängliga nästa månad, men RTX 4090 FE kan skaffa sig en tillräckligt stor ledning för tillfället. Intressant nog ligger RX 6950 XT bara 9 % bakom 4090 FE i Fire Strike Graphics medan det ligger upp till 40 % efter i andra tester, t.ex. Time Spy Graphics.

Unigine-testerna visar att Nvidia-kort leder i allmänhet och RTX 4090 FE i synnerhet. Vi får se 50 %+ förbättringar i både Heaven 4.0-testerna och även i Valley 1.0 OpenGL-testet jämfört med RTX 3090 Ti

Superposition, särskilt vid högre upplösningar, visar att RTX 4090 FE fullständigt decimerar RX 6950 XT med så mycket som 93 % samtidigt som det visar på försprång på upp till 79 % jämfört med RTX 3090 Ti.

Det GA102-baseradeRTX A6000 har en 109-procentig ökning i SPECviewperf-testerna enbart på grund av drivrutinsoptimeringar. Det är av samma anledning som även det Turing-baserade mobila Quadro RTX 5000 kan erbjuda mycket bättre prestanda i Solidworks och Siemens NX, även om de släpar efter i arbetsbelastningar som 3Ds Max och Maya.

Nvidia tillåter ändring av VRAM ECC-statusen även med vanliga Game Ready-drivrutiner. Detta alternativ är inte till någon nytta för spelare eftersom det kan minska minneshastigheterna. Den nya Ada-arkitekturen medför 128 tredje generationens RT-kärnor, vilket är en ökning med 52 % av antalet RT-kärnor i Ampere. Den grundläggande förändringen i Ada's RT-kärnor är att två nya funktioner har lagts till - Opacity Micromap Engine och Displaced Micro-mesh Engine - utöver Box Intersection Engine och Triangle Intersection Engine som ursprungligen ingick i Ampere.

Adas RT-kärnor har också ett nytt schemaläggningssystem för Shader Execution Reordering (SER) som effektivt omordnar trådar för sekundära strålar på ett effektivt sätt för effekter som path tracing, reflektioner, indirekt belysning och translucency. Utvecklare måste dock specifikt utnyttja SER via ett API för att se fördelarna.

Box Intersection Engine (som presenteras av rutorna till vänster i diagrammet) utför traversering av Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH) medan Triangle Intersection Engine beräknar testning av strål- och triangelskärning.

Nvidia sade att Adas RT-kärna kan strålspåra komplex geometri tack vare Displaced Micro-mesh Engine som genererar maskor av mikrotrianglar och accelererad alfa-traversering som åstadkoms av Opacity Micromap Engine.

Även om det är bra att Nvidia investerar i att förbättra RT-renderingstekniken, är det inte alltid så att resultaten i verkligheten representerar ett generationssprång i prestanda. Till exempel visar Metro Exodus (inte Enhanced Edition) endast 5 % ökning med RTX 4090 jämfört med RTX 3090 Ti i spelets Taiga-benchmark

RT-fördelarna börjar bli uppenbara med Control och Dying Light 2 som står för en vinst på 42 % jämfört med RTX 3090 Ti vid 1080p utan DLSS. Far Cry 6 och Watch Dogs: Legion är andra spel som kan visa på märkbara fördelar med RTX 4090:s ray tracing-funktioner.

De kanske största vinsterna ses med Cyberpunk 2077 och Ghostwire: Tokyo som flitigt använder sig av RT-reflektioner och skuggor. Cyberpunk 2077 uppvisar en enorm ökning av RT-prestanda med 75 % jämfört med RTX 3090 Ti i 4K Ultra utan DLSS och RT-kvalitet inställd på Ultra. Siffrorna ligger dock fortfarande under 60 fps sweet spot

rT-prestanda i 1080p i Cyberpunk 2077 och Ghostwire: Tokyo ser en betydande ökning jämfört med det tidigare Ampere-flaggskeppet.
