Until you’ve picked up and held a thin phone, you probably won’t get the appeal. Trust me, once you have, they make complete sense. Whether you then accept the compromises in battery and camera performance is up to you and your requirements. The thing is, thin phones better suit mid-range specs, purely because it's hard to stuff the very best tech inside. They're primarily design-over-specs devices, and the more reasonable cost of the Edge 70 means it makes better sense than other examples that pretend to be high-end models. Yet, it’s very well-made, durable, and available in some fantastic colors. The camera is fine, performance is good if you’re not a high-end gamer, and there’s long support for the software.

The Motorola Edge 70 arguably boasts the best design among today's ultra-slim smartphones. Its premium build delivers everything - lupscale design, increased water and drop resistance, and one of the most comfortable grips in a long time. And on top of that, it's impressively thin. We appreciate the large OLED display with its high resolution and fast refresh rate, and the phone's battery life turned out to be excellent, matched by equally impressive charging speeds. We also have to give credit to Motorola for its clean and thoughtful approach to Android. And then there are the cameras, which deliver excellent results both day and night - ultimately becoming the phone’s most unexpected highlight. The chipset performance is not very competitive.

Probably not, though it is the best example of an ultra-slim phone so far. The Edge 70 combines that thin and light chassis with genuinely strong battery life, immediately raising it above the iPhone Air and Galaxy S25 FE. Its design is one of the best on any phone, with great aesthetics and top-tier durability. While the cameras aren’t quite top tier, you can get some excellent results from both the main and selfie lenses. However, the lack of a telephoto lens means zoom photography is pretty awful. But the big surprise is the poor software experience. Motorola’s once-slick take on Android has become a bloated mess that’s full of useless pre-installed apps and ads at every turn. Meanwhile, the commitment to only four years of OS upgrades falls behind the likes of Apple, Samsung and Google. The Edge 70 gets a lot right, including a more affordable price tag than rivals, but it’s a phone I simply can’t recommend.

The Edge series from Motorola has been one of the most consistently interesting lines of Android phones for cost-conscious buyers; they’re not always the best smartphones around, but they look classy and get you unrivaled value for money in the Android world. But I’m not so sure about the Motorola Edge 70, which has fallen in with the wrong crowd by trying to follow the new thin-phone ‘trend’. Super-thin smartphones are starting to feel like a new bandwagon that tech companies are leaping on, apparently after having noticed the huge lack of interest buyers had in the last bandwagon: AI. This bandwagon’s turning out no better: we didn’t love the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, and the iPhone Air was lambasted online, and so the Motorola Edge 70 has a lot to prove.

Ultrathin phones, in my mind, aren’t true flagships, despite the fact that they usually cost close to a grand. They don’t offer the same high-end camera hardware, processing power takes a hit in such a thin chassis, and the battery leaves much to be desired. That’s why Motorola’s Edge 70 feels like the first slimline phone that makes sense. It’s not a flagship, with a much more comfortable £699 price tag that makes the ultrathin compromises much easier to swallow. And even then, Motorola has managed to up the competition in the all-important battery life and charging department, which alone should make the Edge 70 a tempting alternative to the iPhone Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. The only real chink in its armour is the chipset. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 isn’t exactly a powerful chip, and that’ll immediately put some off.

It's not perfect, but this slim Moto boasts several upgrades vs the flawed iPhone Air. The big one is that near 5000mAh battery, which means this phone can happily last a full, demanding day on a single charge - while other thin phones need a top up before evening. Factor in the fast charge support and the Motorola Edge 70 is a clear winner here. Performance isn't as strong sadly, with a mid-range Snapdragon chipset in charge. All the same, most casual gaming fans should be happy enough, while the everyday experience is smooth. That camera setup includes an ultra-wide, so the Motorola Edge 70 again has an advantage over the iPhone Air there. I like the stock Android vibes, while Moto now offers a more respectable upgrade promise. You've got some decent bonus features, from a well stocked gaming mode to excellent gesture support. Plus the Motorola Edge 70 serves up a quality display and stereo speakers.

At first glance, the Motorola Edge 70 presents itself as a particularly slim smartphone with an eye-catching color palette. You won’t find classic black or white here. Instead, there are three variants to choose from: a deep dark green with golden accents (“Bronze Green”), a petrol-colored tone with orange highlights (“Lily Pad”), and a grey-blue model with blue details (“Gadget Grey”). The petrol-colored model, in particular, is likely to appeal to many of you – our test device, in bronze green, also looks great. Motorola relies on a cooperation with the color specialists from Pantone for the color design and has been bringing trend-conscious designs to the market for years.

I can’t recommend the Motorola Edge 70. Although it offers the best balance between price and functionality of any ultra-thin smartphone I’ve tested, I don’t think that this particular form factor is there yet. If brands don’t drop the idea entirely, I do not doubt that the next generation (or perhaps the one after that) will be even thinner and lighter, while offering better performance and battery life – switching to silicon-carbon cells will be a big help there. For the time being, if you’re desperate for an ultra-thin phone, this is the one to buy. The lightweight build is wonderful, and the price isn’t as tear-inducing as the other options. To anyone else, however, I’d say you’re better off waiting and seeing where this particular trend leads before putting down your money.

Every crazy thin phone I’ve tested to date has been forced to compromise in one way or another. The Edge 70 is the closest any have come to being the total package, which is impressive given it has a more mainstream price than the key competition. It’ll comfortably last a day of use, and won’t keep you waiting when it’s time to refuel. Motorola hasn’t skimped on the styling or materials, either. Performance and camera image quality are more in line with the more affordable side of the mid-range spectrum, though, so you’re definitely paying over the odds in order to lose a few millimetres. If photography or gaming grunt matter more, you may want to shop around.
