That impression didn’t go away. Yet there is also the dawning realisation that the big screen is all you get with the 15-inch Ryzen 5 Surface Laptop 3. It might help to think of it as a physically pumped-up version of a smaller computer with a bigger screen. That makes it good for personal productivity, not so good for games or media production.

That said, few other manufacturers match the solid build quality, excellent design and fantastic keyboards available on from Microsoft’s Surface line. If you’re a Surface diehard, these devices are great — issues aside. Those who want the most for their dollar should look elsewhere.

Despite its flaws, I really do like the Surface Laptop 3 15. I feel like the display is the perfect size. As I said earlier, I've never cared much for 3:2 displays, because they tend to not be as wide as 16:9 screens, and I need apps to run side-by-side. But this screen is the width of a traditional 14-inch laptop, which makes it fine; it's just taller, giving me extra real estate.

On the other hand, the Surface Pro 7 at the same price is a speedy little 2-in-1 convertible, especially if you can live with 128 GB of storage. At $899 the Core i5 with 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage is extremely reasonable. The upcharge for more storage is more palatable when the performance is excellent like it is here. We really liked the Surface Pro 7's mix of looks, great display, light weight, and nice performance, so we're happy to give it our Recommended award.

Meanwhile for Intel, Ice Lake has been years in the making, and, after a long delay, it is finally here. After digging into the platform in-depth, it’s clear that Ice Lake is an incredibly strong offering from Intel. The CPU performance gains are significant, particularly because they were made in the face of a CPU frequency deficit. But the biggest gains were on the GPU side, where Intel’s Gen 11 GT2 in its full 64 Execution Unit configuration is likely the biggest single increase in GPU performance since they started integrating GPUs. It pulls very close to AMD’s Vega, closing the gap in performance to almost zero.

If you want the best 15-inch Surface Laptop 3, you’ll need to look for the business model, and buy that one. You won’t get fancy retail packaging, but you’ll end up with an Intel ‘Ice Lake’ powered system with better overall performance and longer battery life than the rival AMD powered machine. You’ll also get Windows 10 Pro and Wi-Fi 6 to boot. You are looking at about a $100 price premium for the Intel powered Surface Laptop 3, but depending on the configuration it might actually be less expensive as it was in our case. You can find the Surface Laptop 3 for business with pricing starting at $1,099 shipped for the 13.5-inch model or $1,299 for the 15-inch model. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 for Business that we tested today runs $1,599 shipped as it has the double the RAM and SSD size over the base model and may be worth the extra cash as 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD seems a must on premium devices as we enter 2020.

The disparity in value is what I can’t help landing on with the Ryzen 7 version of the Surface Laptop 3. It’s significantly more expensive than the Ryzen 5 model, yet battery life drops under 8 hours. Performance improves somewhat. If you’re deciding upon which Surface Laptop 3 to buy, we’d suggest either the Surface Laptop 3 (Ryzen 5) model instead, or else another laptop suggested above.

Our thesis that the Intel-powered Surface Laptop 3 for Business might be a better bet still holds true—although the Ryzen 7’s performance makes that a much more challenging statement to defend. At just $100 more, the Surface Laptop 3 for Business offers a similarly configured model as our test unit, with a Core i7-1065G7 inside it as well as improved wireless capabilities. That’s the same Core i7-1065G7/16GB/256GB configuration as in the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 7390, which we’ve tested.

AMD Vega 11:

Det här är mindre avancerade grafikkort för användare som ändå vill kunna spela spel. Nya spel bör vara spelbara, men ofta bara med låga detaljinställningar och låg upplösning. Eftersom moderna grafikkort i den här klassen har låg strömförbrukning kan även batteritiden vara bra.
