You’d probably expect top-notch performance in a tiny 13-inch form factor with the label Alienware on it and you are probably right to do so but in reality, the Alienware 13 is everything but a gaming powerhouse. Yes, we are once again met with impeccable build quality with excellent choice of materials – typically for an Alienware product – slightly bulky and a bit hefty for a 13-incher but nothing too alarming, especially for a gaming machine that is. We are still pretty impressed by the horsepower, storage options, and battery that the engineers were able to stick inside the small chassis. For example, you can get a hold of two M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD slots along with a 51Wh battery that will last for nearly a day with normal usage. That’s more than some other premium notebooks and ultrabooks can offer. And to be honest, that was the last thing we were expecting from a gaming-oriented notebook. Oh, and the touchpad and keyboard are pretty comfortable as well.

Incidentally, the machine also scored a 7.1 on the SteamVR performance test, showing it was also "VR Ready." It's a little tough, at the moment, to judge the Alienware 13's value compared to its competition, because when we wrote this, there were no other 13-inch, GTX 1060-based gaming laptops available (at least that we could find on Newegg.com). There was a 14-inch Aorus X3 Plus v6-PC3K4D with GTX 1060 graphics ready for pre-order when we wrote this. It purports to sport a higher-resolution (3,800x1,800-pixel) screen, and it is priced at $100 less. But that high-resolution screen is a poor fit for the abilities of the GTX 1060 graphics. We'd gladly pay $100 more for the privilege of gaming (and working) on the gorgeous OLED screen of the Alienware 13.

Så är det inte längre och det ska vi vara glada för. Just den här modellen har måhända inte det mest potenta grafikkortet, men klarar sig ändå riktigt bra och har en otroligt läcker och skarp OLED-skärm. Batteriet är dessutom ett av de klart bättre och orkar hålla igång datorn länge. Vill du ha en laptop som fortfarande är portabel och kan användas för annat än spel – och du kan leva med den blanka skärmen och den lite knäppa designen – så är Alienware 13 R3 ett bra köp.

Det här är mindre avancerade grafikkort för användare som ändå vill kunna spela spel. Nya spel bör vara spelbara, men ofta bara med låga detaljinställningar och låg upplösning. Eftersom moderna grafikkort i den här klassen har låg strömförbrukning kan även batteritiden vara bra.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M: Ett grafikkort i prestandaklassen ur GeForce GTX 800M-serien för bärbara datorer.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M: Ett grafikkort i övre mellanklassen från GeForce GTX 900M-serien.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M: Ett mobilt grafikkort i prestandaklassen från GTX 900M-serien. Kortet bygger på Maxwell-kretsen GM204.
De här grafikkorten bör klara av alla nuvarande spel med acceptabel bildfrekvens, men inte nödvändigtvis med höga inställningar. Särskilt krävande spel kanske bara fungerar med låga inställningar. Till skillnad från prestandakorten hittar man däremot de här grafikkorten i bärbara datorer av lite mindre format med bättre batteritid.
