The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 is an excellent business laptop if you're willing to spend a premium for it. The OLED display is great, but the exorbitant upcharge to get it is a tough pill to swallow. With or without the OLED upgrade, the X1 Carbon Gen 13 is particularly well suited for those who travel regularly for work or have a daily commute because of how light and long-running it is. And then there's the sturdy build quality and fantastic keyboard that's a part of nearly every ThinkPad. If you want an OLED laptop for work and want to spend less than $2,000 on it, then look to pick up the HP EliteBook Ultra G1i when it's on sale. It's heavier than the X1 Carbon Gen 13 but can usually be found at a discount of $1,899 or $1,999, which is significantly less than the nearly $2,500 that my X1 Carbon Gen 13 costs.

Battery life aside, there has never been much wrong with the ThinkPad X1, and now that that feature has gone from its main weakness to its principal strength, we are even more confident that the Gen 13 ThinkPad X1 is the best compact business laptop in the world. Granted, the doyen of compact laptops, the MacBook Air, can match it and even better it in some areas, but the X1 is lighter, has a bigger display, can be purchased with either Windows or Linux or without an OS altogether, has a superior keyboard and a much better selection of ports. This may not be Crufts, but the ThinkPad X1 Gen 13 Aura Edition is without doubt the Best in Show for compact productivity laptops.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition is easily the pinnacle of ThinkPads with its featherweight chassis, solid power and sublime OLED screen. It also comes with a good port selection, comfortable keyboard and decent endurance. Just watch out for its higher price tag. With this in mind, a comparably priced Dell Pro 14 Premium ditches the OLED screen and skimps a little on ports against this ThinkPad, and is also a little bit heavier. Go the other way towards the Asus Zenbook S 16 (2024) and you’ll get a more powerful laptop with a larger screen and innovative, sleek looks, as well as for a substantial saving. Nonetheless, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition remains the quintessential ThinkPad in 2025, as long as you’ve got the dough for it. If you can get someone else to foot the bill, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition is a great machine. If it were about $1,500 I'd look past the (relatively) meager performance, chalking it up to sacrifices made for portability. But when an Apple device is the cheaper option, you have to ask: what are you planning to do with this laptop? If you need something that's pretty light with great battery life to crush your productivity tasks, get the Apple MacBook Air M4. If you prefer Windows, like touchscreens, and don't mind an extra pound of girth, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition is a fine device. But if your eyes wander to the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition, you'll have to decide if paying the premium Lenovo's demanding is worth it.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition Review: Featherweight Elegance If heavy, clunky laptops are getting you down, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition will be a breath of fresh air. Its clean, no-nonsense design is great, and we love the keyboard and OLED display. The continued inclusion of trackpoint is also a plus, even if Lenovo is moving away from it. This is also a fantastic laptop to take on the road. It's so compact and light, and really just a joy to carry around that we can forgive some of its shortcomings. Battery life and performance are solid with this machine, but this ThinkPad did lag behind other similarly priced laptops at times. For the full $2000+ MSRP, you could get a laptop with higher specs for sure.

Overall, the X1 Carbon Gen 13 is a fantastic and portable 14″ laptop that is suited for most people who aren’t doing super heavy computing or gaming. I really love how light it is and how portable it is. The keyboard is fantastic, the display is OLED and super bright, the webcam is better than average, the battery life is stellar, and the speakers are spot on. The only real thing holding it up is the price. It’s not that it’s not worth the price. It’s just, there are even other Lenovo laptops that are less expensive that can offer the same features. Though probably not the weight.

Although I wouldn't recommend buying the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 13) Aura Edition based on its AI features alone, its powerful computing is enough to sell it if you're looking for a business laptop that can handle some multitasking. Its CPU, 32GB of RAM, and trusted ThinkPad name make it a good buy for someone who uses a moderate amount of power in their work. My two cents—if you're in it for the AI alone, you might want to wait until PCs with AI integration get a little more advanced so you get more bells and whistles.

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition is a sleek, refined beauty. It’s so light that you might forget you put it in your briefcase. Its display produces bright, vivid colors for movies and video calls alike, and it easily handles light multitasking. I even liked using the TrackPoint. But paying over $2,000 for a laptop I know doesn’t have the best multicore performance or battery life is a huge ask. If my employer let me expense it or provide it for my job, I would happily use it. If it had better multicore performance or battery life, I could justify purchasing it myself, but both are dealbreakers. If the X1 Carbon is also giving you price paralysis, I recommend checking out the budget-friendly Asus Expertbook P5 or Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 5. Even if you have $2,000 or more to spend, I still recommend checking out something like the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 because it offers much more battery life and better multitasking performance.

We thought about withholding half a star for its premium price, but our ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 comes in $100 under the HP EliteBook 1040 G11 we tested with a lesser screen and half the RAM, so we can't resist a perfect five-star rating and our Editors' Choice award. As a general-purpose notebook, the Carbon lacks the specialized speed of a desktop-replacement mobile workstation or gaming rig, but its portability, design, and build quality can't be beaten. At 2.17 pounds, it's a stupendous feat of engineering—and, yes, the best laptop on Earth. If you carry your laptop around with you everywhere, you'll appreciate its charms every single day.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition’s key assets are its great looks and excellent feel. It’s a modestly capable system thanks to the new Lunar Lake processor inside, but it’s not the most reasonable system. At $2,519, it’s incredibly expensive for a system that will force you to settle for mediocre performance and you won’t even get extreme battery life in exchange. While the hardware has a lot to love, so do plenty of other laptops, and they can deliver both increased performance and a lower price. The ThinkPad tax is real on this one, and I can only hope Lenovo quickly applies the same kind of massive discounts I’ve seen it tack onto just about every other computer it makes, until then, this won’t be the most sensible choice.

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 is a very good laptop — and will be for just about anyone. It’s incredibly thin, light, and well-built. Meanwhile, its performance is more than fast enough for demanding productivity users, and while its battery life isn’t the best by contemporary standards, it’s much longer than previous generations of Windows laptops. But it’s also very expensive. That includes a spectacular OLED display, but other, less expensive laptops offer the same. Ultimately, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 should be on anyone’s list, but the price will mean that ultimately it’s ThinkPad fans who will appreciate it the most.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition impresses early as the defacto choice for getting work done on-the-go. Design remains unchanged (not a bad thing), ergonomics are incredible, and the new Smart Modes are a huge time saver. But Intel Lunar Lake is a bit of a let down.
