ASUS’ new VivoBook S15 may not be as sexy looking as the Taiwanese company’s other notebooks, but it has power where it counts. A large screen, good performance and realistic price tag (Php 44995 for the Intel Core i5 version and Php 54995 for the Intel Core i7 version) plus discrete graphics make it a good choice for people looking for a notebook that covers the basics without ravaging their wallet.

Nonetheless, the price tag of the configuration with the 940MX poses a serious question whether or not it’s worth your hard-earned cash. The price difference between the ASUS VivoBook Pro 15 N580VD with the Core i5-7300HQ processor and the VivoBook S510UQ that we reviewed is negligible while the former has aluminum build, considerably more powerful hardware, more reliable cooling system and much better screen quality. Other 15-inch alternatives with similar hardware and displays are the Dell Inspiron 15 5567 (configurations with IPS), the more business-oriented Lenovo ThinkPad E570 and the Lenovo Ideapad 520 as a direct competitor.

Asus has equipped the VivoBook S15 S510UQ with a respectable platform in the shape of an 8GB Core i7 CPU and a discrete 2GB Nvidia GPU. However, the build quality could be more robust, there's notable keyboard flex, 256GB of storage might not be enough and the VGA webcam is disappointing. The biggest drawback is battery life, which may not support all-day working for demanding users.

You basically get what you pay for with the ASUS VivoBook S15. Which is to say, not an awful lot. If you're looking to invest in an everyday machine and like the odd game, it may be worth a look, however.

NVIDIA GeForce 940MX:

Det här är mindre avancerade grafikkort för användare som ändå vill kunna spela spel. Nya spel bör vara spelbara, men ofta bara med låga detaljinställningar och låg upplösning. Eftersom moderna grafikkort i den här klassen har låg strömförbrukning kan även batteritiden vara bra.
