Intels Kaby Lake-generation ser visserligen ganska tråkig ut vid första anblicken. Det har inte tillkommit någon ny tillverkningsprocess eller ny mikroarkitektur. Allt påminner oss istället om Haswell-uppdateringen under 2014, som inte innebar några anmärkningsvärda fördelar.

Kaby Lake, å andra sidan, är mer än bara en omdöpning av Skylake-kretsarna. Även om 14nm-processen i princip inte förändrats har man lyckats optimera den avsevärt. Resultaten är överraskande höga klockfrekvenser, alternativt en mycket lägre strömförbrukning vid samma klockfrekvens.

Beroende på frekvensområdet kan vi se effektivitetsförbättringar på någonstans mellan 15 och 25 procent. Det återstår att se om de lägre klockade Core m/Y-modellerna kan prestera ännu bättre. Vi är också angelägna om att få testa de fyrkärniga ULV-processorerna. De är planerade för lansering 2017 och bör tillföra de största prestandavinsterna i 15-wattssegmentet vi har sett hittills i år.

Och sist men inte minst vill vi att berömma den omarbetade videoavkodaren, som inte bara stöder nya codecs som HEVC Main10, utan är också mycket effektivare än tidigare. I kombination med andra effektivitetsförbättringar bör Kaby Lake ge bärbara datorer ännu längre batteritider jämfört med Skylake föregångarna.
