Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

The display backlight flickers at 119 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 99 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.

The frequency of 119 Hz is very low, so the flickering may cause eyestrain and headaches after extended use.

Inget med VivoBook Pro 17 är särskilt iögonfallande, men å andra sidan är detta inte en maskin som försöker vara i framkant i någon särskild kategori. Istället är den ett löfte om värde, en uppmaning till dom som skulle gilla att äga en maskin med kompetent, välavrundad vardaglig prestanda samt kapacitet för enstaka spelande men som inte är intresserade av att betala höga pengar för förstklassig estetik, design och tillhörande utsmyckning.

Inget med VivoBook Pro 17 är särskilt iögonfallande, men å andra sidan är detta inte en maskin som försöker vara i framkant i någon särskild kategori. Istället erbjuder den kompetent, välavrundad vardaglig prestanda samt kapacitet för enstaka spelande till ett rimligt pris - i utbyte mot ett antal andra nackdelar.

Och för det mesta (med förbehåll) så lyckas den med det. Den tunna och lätta VivoBook Pro 17 får väldigt bra poäng på allmän systemprestanda, har snabb halvledar-lagring och kan hantera en typisk spelsession utan några problem. Skärmen är totalt sett också ganska bra, med hög ljusstyrka, bra betraktningsvinklar, respektabel färgåtergivning och en matt yta.

Men vi har våra förbehåll och dom är inte nödvändigtvis små. Medans VivoBook Pro 17 löser en del av problemen som fanns hos dess motsvarighet på 15 tum så kan dess Core i7-8550U (som så ofta är fallet) inte upprätthålla tillräckligt kraftfull flerkärnig prestanda för att rättfärdiga valet framför, säg, en Core i5-8250U (även om den enkelkärniga prestandan är tydligt överlägsen). Maskinen har också ett undermåligt portutbud, ett ganska halvdant plasthölje, underhållssvårigheter, ett alldagligt tangentbord med en besvärlig layout, höga yttemperaturer och dålig batteritid. Om inte någon av dom sakerna är särskilt stötande för användaren så kan den visa sig vara ett värdigt alternativ till dom dyrare lyxmodellerna som finns i samma klass (såsom Dell XPS 15 9560). Men likvärdigt prissatta alternativ med andra uppsättningar för- och nackdelar finns också tillgängliga (såsom Acer Aspire 7 A71-71G-72VY) - så som så ofta är fallet så är den riktiga frågan med dessa prisinriktade maskiner: vilka saker vill du skära ner på?
