Tricky one this. There’s no denying it, this is an excellent phone when it comes to the cameras, the screen and the GUI. It’s a different form-factor, that’s for sure, but I’m not going to berate them too much for that as there’ll definitely be lots of you out there who will love the tall and almost remote-control-like appearance of this device. However, what I will say is that, in this world of “all screen” phone frontages and multiple use cases, it’s a hard sell for Sony to say, “We’re doing this complete letterbox design because that’s how movies are formatted”. Sure, movies look great on the phone and there’s no black bars, but what about for the rest of the time, when your thumb doesn’t reach high enough and you have to employ one of those work-arounds that Sony has put in place to let you use the phone with one-hand?

The 21:9 aspect ratio makes them unique, but I don’t know if it’s enough to make you want to choose these over others in the market. If you were to go with one of these, I’d choose the Xperia 10 Plus over the smaller sibling mainly due to the slightly better specs, larger screen, and better cameras. I really see no reason why the smaller Xperia 10 exists to be honest.

The Sony Xperia 1 is the most exciting of the three Sony smartphones announced at Mobile World Congress 2019, offering all of the company's latest and greatest features. That's not to say the Xperia 10 should be ignored though. For £299, the Xperia 10 gives you a lot of phone. Sure, it misses out on a few things such as waterproofing, a more premium finish and a faster processor, but it also delivers a 6-inch screen with the new 21:9 aspect ratio screen.

Det mest uppenbara med Sonys nya Xperia 10 Mark 3 är formatet. I kompakt format får vi en långsmal oled-skärm i 21:9-formatet och telefonen är den första i serien som har 5G-stöd. På minussidan räknar vi in lite bristande prestanda. Överlag är alltså Xperia 10 mark 3 väldigt trevlig och den känns kompakt och smidig i formatet. Detta mycket så klart då på grund av den långsmala skärmen. Den gör ju att telefonen blir smal om midjan men för samtidigt med sig att det kan bli knepigare att nå skärmens topp när du använder telefonen med en hand. Jämfört med föregångaren Mark 2 är Xperia 10 Mark 3 ett fåtal millimeter mindre även om 5G-stödet tillkommit liksom ett lite kraftfullare batteri, men det kan ju behövas. Även om 5G kanske inte är ett måste idag så gör det telefonen mer framtidssäker, i väntan då på att näten blir mer utbyggda.

Sony hasn’t released a budget phone globally in 2021, but the mid-range Xperia 10 III feels like it should be significantly more affordable. However, the device's efficiency and photo quality are at an average level, which, combined with a relatively high price - 430 euros - makes it not a particularly profitable proposition. The biggest competition for this model will be Samsung Galaxy A52 5G, POCO F3, OnePlus Nord and Mi 11 Lite 5G.

It's expensive for what its specs suggest, and the phone-only box contents don't help make you feel you're getting your money's worth either. The lack of 4K video recording when the previous installment supported it is an odd consequence of the 5G times we live in, but we reckon it could have been avoided with a different choice of chipset, which would have also improved performance numbers. The fact that the display only supports 60Hz refresh rate is inexcusable at this point, and stereo speakers have all but become the norm even in the upper midrange and the 10 IV misses out on those as well. It's not without its strong points, though, the Mark 4. Unrivaled, almost excessive battery life is the first that comes to mind, and having that in a package as light and compact as this tall 6-incher is certainly going to be enough to attract a whole bunch of buyers. As usual, that body is also dust and water-sealed - a notch better than most, even.

The Sony Xperia 10 V offers quite a nice set of features, considering its price. The camera app includes a night mode, auto HDR, and a background blur feature, but it would benefit from additional shooting modes. It feels like Sony are still playing catch up in the mobile phone market, as Apple, Samsung, Google, and others have additional computational shooting modes (such as long exposure). How about the images produced, are they any good? Well, sometimes. In good light, the cameras can product some really good looking images, and colour can be good. At other times, colour is dull. As light levels drop image quality also drops dramatically. There’s also a lack of consistency between shots, in exposure and colour reproduction, so it is often a case of picking the best of several shots to get a good one. The Sony Xperia 10 V offers quite a nice set of features, considering its price. The camera app includes a night mode, auto HDR, and a background blur feature, but it would benefit from additional shooting modes. It feels like Sony are still playing catch up in the mobile phone market, as Apple, Samsung, Google, and others have additional computational shooting modes (such as long exposure). How about the images produced, are they any good? Well, sometimes. In good light, the cameras can product some really good looking images, and colour can be good. At other times, colour is dull. As light levels drop image quality also drops dramatically. There’s also a lack of consistency between shots, in exposure and colour reproduction, so it is often a case of picking the best of several shots to get a good one. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to see why anyone would choose this phone over a Samsung, Google Pixel, or any of the other brands available. There are too many things on this phone that simply aren’t competitive with what’s out there.

Sony:

Bara vissa äldre spel kan spelas flytande med de här grafikkorten. Kretsar med delat minne har fördelen att de utvecklar mindre värme och ger längre batteritid. De duger gott för kontorsbruk, surfande och enklare bildbehandling, men spel och HD-video är inte i syftet med de här kretsarna.
