Of course, price is going to be the big sticking point with this laptop, and I suspect most buyers will gravitate toward the lower-end configurations. The $1,400 version is about in line with the $1,200 MacBook Air, and that’s clearly the machine which both Lenovo is targeting and which buyers are going to have to weigh the Carbon against. They are both exemplary computers, but in the end, I still have to give the nod to Apple for now, as the weak battery and frustrating clickpad on the X1 tips the scales in Cupertino’s favor.

Lenovo put some serious thought into mobile usability with the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, including cellular broadband and the RapidCharge feature. The slightly flexible carbon-fiber chassis is an interesting departure from the rigidity of machined metal cases. Though Lnovo's failure to offer dual USB 3.0 ports and HDMI output is a little disappointing, the port selection isn't radically different from what similar superthin Ultrabooks provide. If you're a serious traveler, the X1 Carbon merits closer inspection.

As far as business-class Ultrabooks the X1 Carbon doesn’t have too much competition. This thing is almost as good as it gets — if an Ultrabook is what you want. If you don’t need the Ultrabook lightweight design for roughly the same price the HP Spectre 14 [see our review] is another solid option. All in all the X1 Carbon is a massive step up over the original, and beats out anything from Lenovo’s past in this size range. Yes the display, battery life, and RAM options could all be better or higher, but in general this machine will be king of the office.

We had no problems at all using the laptop on the Optus network with our iiNet SIM card. All we had to do was enter the correct APN through the Windows networking interface and we were up and running.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch is an executive's dream laptop. It is made with the same carbon fiber that makes his golf club shafts so light and strong. It's nice to look at and is comfortable to use. It's got the power to do real work, from shredding through large spreadsheets to proofing webpages. However, it falls short of the I/O port count and battery life set by the more economical Dell Latitude 6430U, so that system holds on to the Editors' Choice. But if you have the extra bucks to shell out for the X1 Carbon Touch, you'll find it to be a good companion on your day-to-day business dealings, particularly if you're meeting with another company you're looking to acquire.

Yet another Windows 8 Ultrabook touch screen notebook is the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch. It has a 14-inch display with an attractive design, a backlit keyboard and a responsive touch screen. It does suffer from below average battery life and is light on ports. The design of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch is almost a carbon copy to the previous Windows 7 version that lacked a touch screen. The chassis is made of carbon fiber while the keyboard deck and bottom are magnesium. This provides a very sturdy exterior that will certainly survive some bumps and will look good too.

There's no denying the portable nature of this thin 'n' light laptop, even if it is undercut in both metrics by a 13.3-inch MacBook Air. The ThinkPad's processor performance is fractionally faster thanks to its 0.1 GHz advantage over the latter, but the overall choice of CPU, operating system and display together compromise the X1 Carbon's battery life to provide less than half that of what's possible. In its favour, the X1 Carbon has better screen image quality and a characterful keyboard that can command a loyal following. Ultimately, the X1 Carbon looks overpriced and more cheaply constructed than the MacBook Air, and moreover loses out against the more affordable MacBook Pro with Retina display.

The OLED display is simply sublime and worth the extra money if you can afford it. OLED and rapid charging can benefit just about anyone. The extra durability and low-maintenance of the chassis is a cool extra, but unless you work environment is downright hostile, it’s more of a “nice to have” in my book — but still very appreciated. For businesses, durability also implies productivity gains for their IT staff, so it’s money right there.

The same entry-level configuration with WQHD (2560 x 1440) OLED Touch screen costs $1,682.10 with instant savings. That means you’re paying close to a $300 premium for both OLED screen technology and WQHD resolution. If we planned to purchase the X1 Yoga and had the budget to spend an extra $300 then we would happily do so for OLED, but we recognize not everyone will be in that position … and some people would rather have the anti-glare IPS display rather than a glossy OLED.

Honestly, I found the ThinkPad X1 Yoga to be a refreshing Windows-based notebook experience. If anything, the notebook itself gives Windows 10 a good reputation. The two worked together seamlessly to provide an easy to use, yet fully equipped experience. Where Windows 10 did not have an easy to use solution, Lenovo offered support through their super simple configuration application. I have to be honest; I am not a tablet guy. I actually gave away my last tablet, but I found myself using the tablet mode just because it was there and I required a more compact device. At first, the idea of a 2 in 1 seems like a gimmick, but there are situations where the design is warranted, and Lenovo has done an excellent job with the form factor.

Med ips-skärm kostar den här versionen av Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2 890 kronor mindre. Det är alltså inte bara skärmen som gör den till en hisnande dyr liten notebook, utan här är verkligen allt maxat, från byggkvalitet till specar och funktioner. Det enda som känns omodernt är att den inte har några thunderbolt 3-portar, eller ens en vanlig usb av typ c. Den får en rekommendation, men det är ju självklart bara för dig som har oanständiga summor pengar att bränna. Vi andra får nog vänta ett litet tag till på att få oled även i datorn.

But that doesn’t make it more competitive, at least not yet. Missing are the Intel vPro variants that will appeal to business users, as well as lower-priced versions and lower-power displays that will provide better battery life. And the ThinkPad isn’t as fast as others using the same chipset. For those reasons, I can’t recommend it as of now. That could change if Lenovo releases more attractive configurations, but that’s where my opinion stands currently.

Lenovo:

Bara vissa äldre spel kan spelas flytande med de här grafikkorten. Kretsar med delat minne har fördelen att de utvecklar mindre värme och ger längre batteritid. De duger gott för kontorsbruk, surfande och enklare bildbehandling, men spel och HD-video är inte i syftet med de här kretsarna.

Intel HD Graphics 3000: Den integrerade grafikkretsen i Intels Sandy Bridge-processorer (Core ix-2xxx). Snabbare än föregångaren och överklockningsbar med Turbo Boost.

En del nyare spel kan spelas med de här grafikkorten, men bara om de är mindre krävande. De har ändå tillräcklig kapacitet för kontorsbruk och film (möjligen högupplöst). Är grafikkretsen dessutom integrerad kan batteritiden vara utmärkt.

Intel HD Graphics 4000: Den integrerade grafikkretsen i Intels Ivy Bridge-processorer. Prestandan varierar mellan olika processormodeller (ex. ULV eller fyrkärniga). 

Intel HD Graphics 4400: Intel HD Graphics 4400 (GT2) är en integrerad grafikkrets i Intels Haswell-generation (4:e generationen Core-processorer). 

Intel HD Graphics 5000: Intel HD Graphics (GT3) är en integrerad grafikkrets i vissa Haswell-ULV-processorer (15 watt TPD). Till skillnad mot GT3e/Iris Pro Graphics 5200 har den ingen eDRAM-cache. 

Intel HD Graphics 5500: En integrerad grafikkrets (GT2) i Intels lågspänningsprocessorer Broadwell ULV (15 watt)

Intel HD Graphics 515: Integrerad GPU (GT2) med 24 EU:er. Används i Core M-processorer från Skylake-generationen (4,5 W TDP).

Det här är mindre avancerade grafikkort för användare som ändå vill kunna spela spel. Nya spel bör vara spelbara, men ofta bara med låga detaljinställningar och låg upplösning. Eftersom moderna grafikkort i den här klassen har låg strömförbrukning kan även batteritiden vara bra.

Intel HD Graphics 520: Integrerad GPU (GT2) med 24 EU:er i vissa Skylake-processorer (15 W ULV-serien).

 

De här grafikkorten bör klara av alla nuvarande spel med acceptabel bildfrekvens, men inte nödvändigtvis med höga inställningar. Särskilt krävande spel kanske bara fungerar med låga inställningar. Till skillnad från prestandakorten hittar man däremot de här grafikkorten i bärbara datorer av lite mindre format med bättre batteritid.

Intel Arc 8-Cores: Integrerat grafikkort baserat på Xe LPG-arkitekturen (liknar de dedikerade Arc GPU:erna, men med fokus på effektivitet). Innehåller alla 8 Xe-kärnor (128 Xe-vektormotorer) och 8 strålspårningsenheter.

Intel Core i7:

3667U: En strömsnål processor för ultrabooks och andra små bärbara datorer. Klockfrekvensen är 2,0 GHz men kan ökas dynamiskt upp till 3,1 GHz. 

4600U: En tvåkärnig processor från Haswellgenerationen (2013) med låg strömförbrukning (ULV). 

4550U: En processor från Intels Haswell-familj, med två kärnor och mycket låg strömförbrukning (ULV). Den integrerade grafikkretsen är HD 5000.

6500U: Skylake-baserad ULV-processor med dubbla kärnor för tunna bärbara datorer och ultrabooks. Inkluderar en integrerad HD Graphics 520-GPU och tillverkas i 14 nm.

 

5500U: En Broadwell-baserad ULV-processor (Ultra Low Voltage) med två kärnor för bärbara datorer och ultrabooks. Inkluderar HD Graphics 5500 GPU och tillverkas i 14 nm.

Intel Core i5:

3317U: En strömsnål (17 watt) tvåkärnig processor baserad på Intels Ivy Bridge-arkitektur. Klockfrekvensen är 1,7 GHz upp til 2,6 GHz med Turbo Boost.

3427U: En strömsnål (ULV)-processor från Ivy Bridge-familjen med en TDP på 17 watt och en klockfrekvens på mellan 1,8 GHz och 2,8 GHz.

5200U: En Broadwell-baserad ULV-processor (Ultra Low Voltage) med två kärnor för bärbara datorer och ultrabooks. Inkluderar HD Graphics 5500 GPU och tillverkas i 14 nm.

Intel Core m7:

6Y75: Skylake-baserad ULV-processor med dubbla kärnor för surfplattor och 2-i-1-system. Har en integrerad HD Graphics 515-GPU och tillverkas i 14 nm.

 

Intel Intel Meteor Lake-H:

Ultra 7 155H: Ett avancerat Meteor Lake-chip som debuterade i december 2023. Denna 1:a generationens Core Ultra-processor har kommit för att ersätta 13:e generationens Core-chip; den har 16 kärnor (6 + 8 + 2) och 22 trådar till sitt förfogande. Performance-kärnorna, som är 6 till antalet, arbetar i upp till 4,8 GHz medan Efficient-kärnorna, som är 10 till antalet (8 huvudkärnor plus 2 extra som finns i Low Power Island) arbetar i upp till 3,8 GHz. Den integrerade AI Boost NPU erbjuder två Gen 3-motorer för acceleration av AI-arbetsbelastning. Den här processorns "minsta garanterade" strömförbrukning är 28 W medan dess Turbo-strömförbrukning är tänkt att hålla sig inom 115 W.
