The ZBook Ultra we were sent to evaluate will set you back £2,111.99 and comes with a 1TB SSD and 64GB of LPDDR5x-8533 RAM. That is £100 less than an entry-level 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro with a matching 1TB SSD but only 32GB of RAM. Pick the AMD Max Pro 390 CPU with 32GB of RAM, and the price drops to £1,993, which doesn't seem like such great value in comparison. At the other end of the scale, for £2,820, you can have the machine we tested, but with a 2TB SSD and 128GB of RAM.For comparison, choose a 14in MacBook Pro with the entry-level M4 Pro chipset, a 2TB SSD, and 48GB of RAM, you'll be out of pocket to the tune of £3,199.If you want a compact 14in Windows laptop with a discrete GPU, there are several alternatives.

Let’s be brutally honest, this is a fantastic laptop that takes Intel’s best silicon and pushes past it effortlessly, but the price HP chose is somewhat of a gouge. Most managers find it challenging enough to get a $2,000 laptop approved, but this one could easily exceed $4,000 or more, depending on options. Recently, I reviewed the Bossgame M5 AI, a mini PC that uses the same AI 395 platform, which comes with 128GB of memory and 2TB of Kingston-branded storage. That costs about $1800, meaning you could have two of them for the price of one ZBook. Yes, you would need monitors, keyboards and mice, but that’s a huge difference, and entirely rebuffs the notion that this is expensive because AMD is asking too much for its latest chips. But without competition, it can.

The HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14 is a distinct machine among Windows-based workstations. It presents a forward-thinking AMD Ryzen AI Max+ Pro chipset that combines a potent CPU and a powerful IGP, with a massive 128GB of memory shared between them. It's an innovative choice and a capable performer for business users who occasionally handle heavy datasets or media creation tasks. With a beautiful OLED panel, premium design, and business-friendly security, it's not hard to see the laptop's appeal. However, the combined CPU and IGP also leads to some notable limitations, struggling to compete against discrete Nvidia workstation GPUs. Meanwhile, the high-powered hardware and thin-and-light design come with a couple of trade-offs: reduced battery life and an inability to upgrade components down the line.

It’s a pity, then, that its starting price can be a bit steep for the everyday Joe. At S$2,754, the base model costs almost the same as the most powerful MacBook M4 Pro, which retails for S$2,799, and at the expense of battery life, an important consideration for on-the-go work (and play). The laptop is a beast at what it does best, whether it’s CPU-intensive processes, demanding creative work, or general productivity, so those who are willing to shell out the cash and prefer the Windows ecosystem will find plenty to be delighted with. For the casual user unable to harness its full potential, though, there are better value options on the market.

The HP ZBook Ultra G1a is a pretty serious machine. It's got conservative stylings with an aluminum enclosure, company logo, and not an LED to be found. But serious also means a factory-calibrated OLED display for creative pros, sixteen CPU cores for those who need lots of performance, and gobs of memory. Serious even extends to the integrated GPU which boasts excellent performance that's on par with a lot of discrete solutions paired with "serious" professional drivers rather than the gaming-focused variety. Unfortunately, the seriousness of the machine also results in a couple of shortcomings. First of all, the Wolf Security Suite did have a performance impact so we tested with it disabled.

If you’re OS agnostic like I tend to be, you want a portable, powerful, efficient workstation to meet your day-to-day requirements and make sure you don’t miss a beat when working or creating in your off time. The HP ZBook Ultra 14 G1a comes very close to eclipsing my MacBook Pro in terms of portability and beats the base MacBook Pro's CPU power, but it comes at the cost of battery life and a higher price. The base configuration of the ZBook Ultra costs $2,599, which is a bit steep for the average consumer. And it doesn’t get the full leverage of the Ryzen AI Max Pro chipset’s unified memory. If you need the ultimate combination of affordability, power, and battery life, the MacBook Pro 14 (M4, 2024) is still the way to go, especially if you don’t need to run Windows to access all of your applications.

De här grafikkorten bör klara av alla nuvarande spel med acceptabel bildfrekvens, men inte nödvändigtvis med höga inställningar. Särskilt krävande spel kanske bara fungerar med låga inställningar. Till skillnad från prestandakorten hittar man däremot de här grafikkorten i bärbara datorer av lite mindre format med bättre batteritid.
