While the iPhone Air sucked up a lot of the oxygen in the room when it came to chatter, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are still the best iPhones that Apple sells at premium prices. Their superior camera array and the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s fantastic battery life make these the phones to get if you’re always snapping photos from a distance and testing the limits of your tech. I’m no fan of the iPhone 17 Pro’s rising price or how heavy these phones are, but I’m so all-in on the iPhone 17 Pro Max that I’m going to go order one right now.

Strangely enough, though, the iPhone 17 Pro shares some of the same pitfalls as Google’s latest Pixels as well. Its battery life and charging setup are only average, as the heat from the A19 Pro chipset builds up, causing the device to drain quickly and resulting in a slight performance slowdown. I’d hoped for more from Apple’s new battery claims, especially with a 50% charge in just 20 minutes and a vapor chamber to beat the heat, but neither has really lived up to expectations, even after a month with the phone. And then, there’s Apple Intelligence. I thought it would be much closer to matching Google’s roster of Gemini features by now, but it remains oh so easy to ignore. I barely use the Image Playground; Clean Up still leaves me with wonky artifacts, and a more conversational Siri remains missing in action.

Aside from the slightly smaller screen and slight reduction in battery life, the smaller Pro model does everything the Pro Max does, and I personally prefer the size. Either way, though, you won’t be disappointed.

The iPhone 17 Pro is a great smartphone for photographers, being capable of taking excellent images and video. As I say pretty much every year, however, it doesn’t represent a huge evolution in terms of the camera. There are a couple of good improvements – such as finally having three high-resolution sensors, and a long overdue upgrade to the selfie camera. The new square sensor giving you the option to capture selfies horizontally without moving the camera is a feature I scoffed at when I heard about it, but I actually liked it quite a lot in the end. Elsewhere, improvements to things such as battery life, the anti-reflective coating, and the brightness of the screen are all nice-to-haves, but may not be quite enough to tempt you if you already have an iPhone 16 Pro, and possibly the iPhone 15 Pro. Still, keeping hold of your phone for a number of years is no bad thing.

I’m really torn this year mainly because of the price increase given to the iPhone 17 Pro. Yes, I’m in love with the new redesign, how much more flexible it is shooting selfies with its Center Stage camera, the strong performance out of its A19 Pro chip, and how it gets double the storage capacity. If you’re asking me which one I’d recommend between the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, my answer would be for the latter because of the larger display and longer battery life. For the $100 difference, it’s worth the money — whereas in the past, it would’ve been normally a $200 spread between them. You should get the iPhone 17 Pro if you simply prefer a smaller phone without compromising on the camera performance. On the other hand, it certainly has tough competition with phones like the Pixel 10 Pro.

Surprising absolutely no one, Apple has unveiled the new iPhone 17 series. I was able to take a high speed hands-on demo of the iPhone 17 Pro, and made a beeline for the new Cosmic Orange model. I'm already very taken with the way it looks and feels, and don't even mind the new camera plateau, but maybe that's just because I'm a sucker for change. In spite of the new unibody design, I found the camera control button on the right still reasonably easy to press, although I think I'm more used to the one on the iPhone 16 Pro and find it a bit easier to click at the moment. More importantly, and this is something I'll have to spend more than an hour with an iPhone 17 Pro to verify, the redesign should help with battery life.

Apple A19 Pro 6-Core GPU: En relativt snabb grafikadapter som Apple A18 Pro SoC är utrustad med. Denna iGPU har 6 kärnor och är RT-aktiverad; det verkar som om den är baserad på samma arkitektur som M4-seriens GPU:er. Den lyckades slå den 7-kärniga Apple M1 GPU i många tester i våra tester i oktober 2024.

Det här är mindre avancerade grafikkort för användare som ändå vill kunna spela spel. Nya spel bör vara spelbara, men ofta bara med låga detaljinställningar och låg upplösning. Eftersom moderna grafikkort i den här klassen har låg strömförbrukning kan även batteritiden vara bra.

A19 Pro: En kraftfull processor för smartphones och den formella efterföljaren till A17 Pro. Den har 2 prestandakärnor och 4 effektiva kärnor tillsammans med en 35 TOPS NPU och den 6-kärniga A18 Pro GPU.
