Probably not, though the phone does boast quite a few impressive features. Its battery life, like many other Oppo devices, is hard to beat. It also has an impressive display and is surprisingly smooth with top-shelf mobile games. However, the phone’s slow loading speeds, bags of bloatware, lacklustre camera, and low-resolution display means other brands can top it with ease. Oppo might have a long-standing reputation in the budget market, but it is losing ground to hungrier and more impressive handsets. Unless the company does something drastic to improve its low-cost handsets, it does not look like that is going to change.

Alright, so the OPPO A5 Pro 5G comes in with some impressive durability features, like an IP69 rating for water and dust resistance and MIL-STD-810H military-grade shock protection. It's built to survive drops, spills, and even a dip in boiling water. But when you get past the durability, things start to feel a bit... lackluster. The 6.67-inch display with an HD+ resolution just doesn't cut it. Sure, it has a 120Hz refresh rate, but the thick bezels and relatively low resolution are a letdown for the price, especially when you're used to seeing sharper displays at this price point. The camera is another area where the A5 Pro doesn't quite do well. It's not a terrible camera by any means, but it's definitely not in the same league as some of the competition.

The Oppo A5 5G offers a tempting value proposition at £179, undercutting several high-profile rivals by about 10%. It also comes with the tempting offer of a huge 6000mAh battery, which could conceivably last you into a third day of usage. It’s a well-built phone, too, with a decent level of water and dust resistance.However, this simply isn’t as pleasant to live with day to day as some of its key rivals. The key culprit is a 720p IPS display that simply isn’t as sharp or colourful as many of its rivals.Performance is adequate rather than outstanding, while the camera provision is bare bones at best, and lacks a certain flexibility. The Oppo A5 5G simply lacks the balance necessary to excel in the budget space. We’d have preferred Oppo to charge the extra £20 and give us the fully rounded experience that’s on offer elsewhere.

Sure, it’s rugged and offers a decent battery but, at these prices, the A5 5G’s screen should at least offer higher resolution, if not a better display quality than IPS LCD. Budget shoppers might not have a lot to spend, but they expect bang for their buck, and they’ll find more bang elsewhere.

In a vacuum, the Oppo A5 5G is a decent phone for the £179 / AU$299 asking price. However, when you compare it to the competition, the value proposition becomes a little more iffy. I reviewed this phone immediately after spending time with the CMF Phone 2 Pro. At MSRP, that device should cost £40 more, but currently the difference is less than £30 on Amazon. It's not an insignificant amount, but when you consider that the CMF Phone comes with a triple camera setup, 4K video recording, a gorgeous (smudge-free) 10-bit OLED display, a much more powerful chipset, and double the RAM - the Oppo A5 5G becomes very difficult to recommend. Sure, the Oppo A5 has one of the largest batteries in its class, but when the experience is compromised elsewhere, that doesn't feel like a good trade-off. Personally, I'd take a faster processor, an extra camera or a nicer screen over a big battery - and that's exactly what a lot of the competition offers.

Oppo:

En del nyare spel kan spelas med de här grafikkorten, men bara om de är mindre krävande. De har ändå tillräcklig kapacitet för kontorsbruk och film (möjligen högupplöst). Är grafikkretsen dessutom integrerad kan batteritiden vara utmärkt.

ARM Mali-G615 MP2: Mellanklassgrafikchip för smartphones med 2 av 6 möjliga kärnor. Baserat på den fjärde generationen av Valhall-arkitekturen. Erbjuder skuggning med variabel hastighet.

Bara vissa äldre spel kan spelas flytande med de här grafikkorten. Kretsar med delat minne har fördelen att de utvecklar mindre värme och ger längre batteritid. De duger gott för kontorsbruk, surfande och enklare bildbehandling, men spel och HD-video är inte i syftet med de här kretsarna.

Dimensity 7300: Dimensity 7300 är en mellanklassprocessor med ett integrerat 5G-modem. CPU-delen integrerar fyra ARM Cortex-A78-kärnor med upp till 2,5 GHz och fyra Cortex-A55 power-kärnor med upp till 2 GHz. SoC:n är tillverkad med den moderna 4nm-processen.

Mediatek Dimensity 6000:

Dimensity 6300: Processorn har totalt åtta kärnor, som är uppdelade i två kluster. Den ena har två ARM Cortex-A76-prestandakärnor med upp till 2,4 GHz vardera, medan den andra har sex ARM Cortex-A55-energisparande kärnor med upp till 2,0 GHz vardera. LPDDR4x RAM med 2.133 MHz kan användas som RAM och UFS 2.2 stöds som internminne. Dimensity 6300 är mycket lik den gamla Dimensity 6080.

Qualcomm Snapdragon:

SD 6s 4G Gen 1: Snabb ARM SoC i mellanklass med 8 CPU Kryo 260-kärnor (fyra snabba 2 GHz Cortex-A73-kärnor i ett kluster och två strömsparande 1,8 GHz Cortex-A53-kärnor) och en ganska långsam Adreno 610 GPU. Tillverkad i en 11 nm LPP-process.
