Granskning av Intel Alder Lake-S: Har Intel återigen den snabbaste spelprocessorn?

Intel har många planer med Alder Lake-S. I åratal var Intel riktmärket för den snabbaste spelprocessorn, tills AMD satte fart på saker och ting med sin Ryzen 5000 och tog kronan. För slutanvändaren har detta katt-och-mus-spel många fördelar, eftersom det bidrar till att förbättringar snabbare når ut till massorna.

Med de nyaste processorerna för desktop-segmentet och den 12:e generationen av Core-serien introducerar Intel återigen en förändring av plattformen. Efter Comet Lake-S och Rocket Lack-S är LGA1200 redan historia, och den större LGA 1700-sockeln tar över. De mest kända förbättringarna är DDR5- och PCIe 5.0-stödet. I dagsläget finns det dock fortfarande inga produkter tillgängliga som kan utnyttja denna fulla bandbredd. Detta gör investeringen i plattformen till en investering som bara kan användas i framtiden. Det ser lite bättre ut i arbetsminnet. De som vill vara med på den senaste trenden och få bästa prestanda kommer inte runt det nya DDR5-arbetsminnet. Men Intel Alder Lake-S-processorerna har även stöd för DDR4 RAM-minne. Du kan hitta motsvarande styrelser till salu även med det nya avancerade Z690-chipsetet.

Med Alder Lake-S tar Intel ett stort steg framåt som inte bara är en liten Rocket Lake-S-uppdatering. Den nya designen är uppdelad i prestandakärnor, de så kallade P-kärnorna, och energieffektiva kärnor, E-kärnorna. Detta gör att toppmodellen kan hantera 24 trådar, vilket är resultatet av 8 P-kärnor inklusive hyperthreading (HT) och 8 E-kärnor utan HT. I den mindre Intel Core i5-12600K, som vi också undersöker i den här recensionen, är det 6 P-kärnor och 4 E-kärnor, vilket resulterar i 16 trådar. De nya E-kärnorna är tänkta att avlasta P-kärnorna och frigöra dem så att de kan erbjuda tillräcklig beräkningsprestanda för krävande tillämpningar medan E-kärnorna hanterar bakgrundsprocesserna. Men E-kärnorna är ingalunda långsamma beräkningsenheter och deras prestanda ligger på Skylake-nivå. Den optimala hanteringen av kärnorna sköts av Intel Thread Director. Windows 11 som operativsystem är ett krav för optimal användning.

De två processorerna kommer direkt från Intel. G.Skill och även Corsair tillhandahöll det helt nya DDR5-arbetsminnet för oss, och det nya moderkortet Z690kommer direkt från Asus. Caseking stöder oss med Raijintek Pean Showcase, och som kylning använder vi Alphacool Eisbear Aurora 280 AiOsom ställdes till vår förfogande av Alphacool.

Viktig anmärkning

Alla benchmarks kördes på ett nyinstallerat Windows 11-system. Den senaste Bios-versionen tillhandahölls oss av Asus. Vad som är viktigt att veta är att med standardinställningarna är PL1 och PL2 lika stora, vilket innebär att CPU:n alltid kan ta ut maximal prestanda utan några begränsningar. Vi använde oss av standardinställningarna för den här recensionen.

Asus har gett oss i tid med ROG Maximus Z690 Hero, som ligger till grund för denna recension. Vi tackar Asus Tyskland för detta lån. Asus ROG Maximus Z690 Hero ser väldigt massiv ut, vilket kan härledas till det stora kylsystemet. Totalt sett kan du få plats med upp till fem M.2-SSD-enheter på moderkortet, men då måste du installera två av de fem SSD-enheterna på ett separat Hyper M.2-kort. Detta kommer att kunna använda den fulla bandbredden i Gen 5-stödet och ingår som ett tillbehör i lådan. Den nya LGA 1700-sockeln sticker ut med den något avlånga designen. Många LGA 1200-kylsystem är också kompatibla med den nya LGA 1700-sockeln, men du bör se till att fråga tillverkaren direkt. Ibland erbjuds andra monteringsfästen för LGA 1700 för att säkerställa optimalt kontakttryck på CPU:n.

Du kan installera upp till 128 GB av det nya DDR5-arbetsminnet. WiFi, 2,5 Gbit LAN och totalt 20 USB-portar ser till att du har tillräckliga anslutningsmöjligheter.

Två 8-pin strömkontakter inte långt från sockeln ger ström till CPU:n. Spänningstransformatorerna täcks av ett mycket massivt kylblock med bland annat ett heatpipe. Dessutom finns det en attraktiv Polymo-blixtpanel ovanför I/O-skölden, som är ganska snygg.

Benchmarks för processorer

Intel kan hålla löftet om en betydande prestandaökningjämfört med Rocket Lake-S-processorerna. I prestandabedömningen, som speglar prestandaskillnaden i alla listade benchmarks, kan Intel Core i9-12900K tydligt placera sig i topp. Jämfört medAMD Ryzen 9 5900X, som också erbjuder 24 trådar totalt, ligger det nya flaggskeppet från Intel före med 13 procentenheter. Om vi tar hänsyn tillIntel Core i9-11900K som referens, är Core i9-12900K 23 procent snabbare. Även om skillnaderna varierar något i de separata riktmärkena beror detta på motsvarande CPU-arkitektur.

Vi ser en liknande bild med den mindre Intel Core i5-12600K. Om vi använder AMD Ryzen 7 5800X som konkurrent eftersom den har samma antal trådar, presterar båda konkurrenterna i ögonhöjd i de kumulativa benchmarkresultaten. Å andra sidan har Zen3-processorn svårt att konkurrera med Intels kraftfulla prestanda för enstaka kärnor. Men man ska inte avskriva AMD än, eftersom Zen3-processorerna redan har funnits på marknaden i ett år och enligt vissa rykten är efterföljaren redan i startgroparna. När den finns tillgänglig kommer tärningarna att kastas på nytt och Rocket Lake-S måste bevisa sig själv igen.

På grund av diskussionen om PL1 = PL2 tog vi Cinebench R23 och utförde en ny körning med ett PL1-värde begränsat till 125 watt. Det fanns inga förändringar i resultatet som var värda att nämna. Skillnaderna var minimala och kan anses ligga inom mätningstoleranserna.

Det stod klart att Intel skulle göra ett rejält språng med den nya utformningen av P- och E-kärnorna. I och med detta kan Intel även täppa till gapet till 12- och 16-kärniga processorer från AMD, vilket inte var möjligt med Core i9-11900K.

Syntetiska riktmärken och tillämpningsprestanda

I de syntetiska riktmärkena ligger de nya Alder Lake-S-processorerna i framkant. Bortsett från några få undantag där AMD ska erbjuda den bättre plattformen kan Intel Core i9-12900K uppnå en solid fördel. Det är därför inte förvånande att de två Alder Lake-S-processorerna delar på de två topplaceringarna i de två kumulativa benchmarkresultaten. Vi blev dock fortfarande lite överraskade, eftersom vi inte förväntade oss en andraplats för Intel Core i5-12600K i den totala rankingen.

Nu kommer vi till de mest intressanta benchmarks och den disciplin där de nya Intel Alder Lake-S-processorerna verkligen kan visa vad de går för. Jämfört med Rocket Lake-S kan de nya processorerna öka sin prestanda avsevärt, vilket du kan se i benchmarks för spel. I den kumulativa jämförelsen av de nio spelen kan Intel Core i9-12900K precis gå före Intel Core i9-12900K AMD Ryzen 9 5900X. Du måste också veta här att det finns vissa spel som harmoniserar bättre med Intel-processorer och andra som ger bättre prestanda med AMD-processorer. I den interna tävlingen mellan de två Alder Lake-S-processorerna förlorar Intel Core i5-12600K med 8 procentenheter mot flaggskeppet och hamnar bara knappt före Intel Core i5-11600Kmed detta.

Trots detta levererar båda processorerna en mycket bra spelprestanda. På grund av de många förändringarna i plattformen och operativsystemet kan vi kanske också förvänta oss ytterligare prestandaförbättringar i form av uppdateringar i framtiden. Det finns dock inga garantier för detta. Prestandan i den rena CPU-gränsen är mycket hög och beroende på spel även betydligt före konkurrenterna. Vi måste dock fortfarande konstatera att även om Intel har den snabbaste spel-CPU:n i sin portfölj här, kan avståndet till Zen3-processorn inte kallas enastående. Dessutom rycker alla konkurrenter närmare varandra med ökande upplösning, så att CPU:n bara spelar andrafiolen bakom GPU:n som avgörande faktor för FPS-höjning. De som även strömmar innehåll utöver det egentliga spelandet kommer att dra nytta av det högre antalet trådar, vilket också gör de nya modellerna mycket intressanta för innehållsskapare.

Enligt de tekniska specifikationerna har processorerna en TDP på 125 watt. Detta avser PL1-värdet. PL2-värdet anger hur många watt som är tillgängliga för processorn vid full belastning om alla krav är uppfyllda. Med en maximal effekt på 241 watt är Intel Core i9-12900K något effektivare än Intel Core i9-12900K Intel Core i9-11900K. I vårt test var Alder Lake-S-flaggskeppet faktiskt bara effektivareän föregångaren i Prime95-stresstestet. Våra mätningar visade dock fortfarande strax under 280 watt för hela systemet. I Cinebench R15 Multi-testet förbrukade vårt testsystem nästan 25 procent mer ström. Detta är en ökning som inte bara kan kastas bort. I Intel Core i5-12600K är PL2-värdet begränsat till 150 watt, vilket också återspeglas i våra mätresultat. Jämfört med Intel Core i5-11600Kär Intel Core i5-12600K 7 % effektivare. Bilden förändras dock i stresstestet, och Core i5-12600K drar 13 % mer ström från uttaget. De uppmätta värdena under spelande ökar naturligtvis med den Nvidia Titan RTX. Vi kan dock även här se att Alder Lake-S-plattformen inte bjuder in till energibesparing.

Våra uppmätta temperaturer visade att Intel Core i9-12900K nådde 100 °C redan flera minuter efter att ha startat Prime95-jämförelsetestet . När vi fortsatte med stresstestet var vi sedan tvungna att strypa processorn för att undvika att skada den. Detta är nackdelen med inställningen PL1 = PL2 i Bios. Vi märkte dock inte av någon strypning under belastning i Cinebench R15 Multi-slingan. För att utesluta en dålig installation av kylsystemet tog vi också bort och installerade sedan om det vid ett tillfälle, men resultatet efteråt var detsamma. Vi kontaktade även Alphacool för att försäkra oss om att det inte finns någon inkompatibilitet hos den kylare vi använde. Enligt tillverkaren är Alphacool Eisbear Aurora 280 AiO som vi använde kompatibel med LGA 1700-sockeln. Intel Core i5-12600K var något lättare att kyla under belastning, men vi noterade ändå en maximal temperatur på 95 °C (203°F).

Så de som vill använda en Intel Core i9-12900K bör också skaffa ett mycket kraftfullt kylsystem för att få ut det mesta av processorn.
