HP gets points for style with its new 14-inch Omen Transcend model, a compact option for the compact gaming/creative crowd in the not-expensive-but-not-cheap mainstream price range. With performance suitable for high-quality 1080p or mid-quality 1440p gaming, along with a striking design, it's a definite option to consider if you're in the market and don't care about a few potential flaws. The Transcend comes in dark gray or white -- the latter costs $20 extra -- and can be configured in a variety of ways. The only display available is the 2,880x1,00 60Hz/120Hz dynamic-refresh-rate OLED, though. It starts at $1,500 with an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, GeForce RTX 4050, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM and Wi-Fi 6E.

The HP Omen Transcend 14 isn’t flawless, but its strengths outweigh its weaknesses. After spending a week with it, the HP Omen Transcend 14 feels like a gaming laptop made for people like me. Its understated ultraportable design makes it an ideal travel partner that won’t get you sideways glances on the train. Performance is also excellent at 1080p and medium settings, and I had a blast with the RGB keyboard. The bright and colorful OLED is another big selling point. Admittedly, the battery life isn’t great and its AI features might not mean much to most people. I also don’t like that it only uses USB-C charging — and only charges as intended with just one of the ports. While there’s not much you can do about the latter, you can ignore the AI features (if you even notice they exist) and can always keep the laptop plugged in when gaming — which is typical for gaming laptops.

Every laptop is designed to balance cost with quality, catering to specific needs while ignoring others, and it’s our duty to inform you of their benefits and shortcomings and recommend those products based on what you might like. In this case, it’s pretty clear where the HP Omen Transcend 14 lies: Its thin and light 14-inch build makes it highly portable, while impressive productivity metrics, a stunning 2.8K OLED display, and a built-in graphics card create a great laptop for those who value image quality and only plan to game once in a while. But even when looking at this as a productivity laptop first and a gaming laptop second, its short battery life, frustrating touchpad, and weak audio make it far from a home run. For a gaming laptop at a nearly identical price of $1,399 but with better gaming performance, we recommend the Asus ROG Strix G17. Otherwise, if you’re on the lookout for a solid portable laptop that can game only just fine, the Omen Transcend 14 may be the right pick for you.

The HP Omen Transcend 14 is a great machine. It feels like it’s made for someone who isn’t only a gamer — if all you do is leave this on a desk and play games all day, you may still have a great experience thanks to that beautiful OLED screen. But the real value proposition comes once you pick it up and take it places, using it as a slightly heavier than the average ultraportable machine that also delivers great gaming performance when you want it. With that in mind, the optimal audience here is people who want a great gaming machine with a beautiful screen that can also be lightweight and portable. Everything involves compromises: You can get more performance in a heavier, beefier laptop. And you can get lighter weight in a laptop without a gaming GPU.

HP Omen Transcend 14 is part of a new class of gaming laptops for 2024. There remains key comparisons to be made with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and Lenovo Legion Slim 5i 14, both of which are being tested by Trusted Reviews with now. For now, I can say that other slimline gaming laptops I’ve tested like the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 aren’t as sleek and elegant as this one, and the price tag is surprisingly accessible, at least by premium gaming laptop standards. You’re making some compromises to get that design. Playable frame rates at native resolution will be out of the question without dropping settings down to High or even Medium, even with DLSS turned on and Ray Tracing toned down or turned off. You’ll get more bang per buck from a conventional gaming laptop.

The Omen Transcend 14 is HP’s initial try at this class of gaming laptop, and it’s a great first attempt. A solid, thin, and light design pushes this beyond just a gaming workstation, and the OLED display is stunning. It seems HP focused a little too heavily on the portability of this laptop, however. USB-C charging worries me with the RTX 4070 configuration, and gaming struggles on the high-resolution display with lower-end configurations. This is a solid gaming laptop, and if it weren’t for stiff competition from Asus at the same price, it would get a recommendation. That’s unfortunately not the case. At list price, the Omen Transcend 14 compromises a bit too much compared to the competition. However, if you spot the laptop on sale, particularly at around $1,400 for the RTX 4060 configuration, it’s a great machine.
