The well-built and attractive VivoBook V551LB-DB71T is one of the fastest mainstream laptops we've seen. It provides the latest-generation CPU and discrete graphics for under $1,000, which is not unheard-of but highly unusual. However, we suspect that some folks will find the tradeoff—the lackluster, low-res 1,366x768 screen—a deal-breaker, especially if they often use their PCs for video playback.

With the Asus VivoBook V551LB-DB71T, you get approximately the look and feel of the higher-end Asus Zenbook UX51VZ-DH71, but for a lot less money. An attractive, solidly built 15.6-inch thin laptop with overall good performance, the Asus VivoBook V551LB-DB71T is held back by its lackluster display.

The VivoBook V551LB is a mixed bag of highs and lows, with very good battery life, but a sub-par screen. It has a mostly premium-feeling shell, but lacks the solid-state storage or backlit keyboard that we’ve come to expect with a system priced at near $1,000. That doesn’t make the VivoBook a bad option by any means.

Compared with other slim systems, like the Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A-BHI5T or the budget-friendly Asus VivoBook S400CA-UH51, the Asus VivoBook V551LB-DB71T is impressive. It may not bring a lot of new features or radical design changes to the 15-inch laptop space, but with a fourth-generation Intel processor, Nvidia graphics, and category-leading performance, it doesn't have to. This 15-inch laptop may look like an ultrabook, but it's more of a desktop replacement, and succeeds the Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS) as our Editors' Choice for mainstream desktop replacement laptops.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M: Ett grafikkort från GT 700M-serien från 2013 med 384 grafikkärnor med varierande prestanda beroende på modell. 

Det här är mindre avancerade grafikkort för användare som ändå vill kunna spela spel. Nya spel bör vara spelbara, men ofta bara med låga detaljinställningar och låg upplösning. Eftersom moderna grafikkort i den här klassen har låg strömförbrukning kan även batteritiden vara bra.
