If you're looking for a budget-friendly gaming machine that's reliable, you can't get much better than the Helios. Between the top-tier components and effective cooling system, this affordable laptop more than gets the job done. If you're a hardcore gamer, it's powerful enough to handle virtual-reality experiences and the occasional AAA title. And if you just need a multi-tasking workhorse, it can do that too.

Acer Predator Helios 300 (G3-571) midrange gaming laptop review (GTX 1060 6GB, I7-7700HQ)

I’ll keep it short. The Acer G3-571 / Helios 300 is a basic gaming laptop, but for $1050 (current price), the laptop is the most convincing gaming laptop for that price I’ve tested. It sports the usual hardware of I7-7700HQ, GTX 1060 6GB, 1080p IPS display (with low response times in my unit) and a SATA 256GB SSD and it’s easy to find 1TB HDD for $50 to throw in. The basics are good – performance is as expected (actually I got a little higher FPSs compared to the Y720), temps are in the safe range and are lower – again – than the Lenovo Y720, keyboard is rather good. The most notable drawbacks are the low color IPS display (common), the lack of mDP, and only 2xUSB 3.0 port and ofcourse no Thunderbolt 3 and sound quality isn’t good. It doesn’t have GSync either, but that’s not different compared to the competition. So, I find this machine to be a better choice compared to the Lenovo Y720.

The Helios 300 is a highly customizable laptop that delivers some pretty solid gaming performance. The screen and weight are two things that bring it down, and we wish that it would run a little bit quieter. But these faults aside, it’s a great attempt by Acer to create an affordable gaming laptop that can cater to any gamer’s needs.

It may not be quite fair (or altogether appropriate) to think of the Acer Predator Helios 300 as a kinder, gentler Predator. But at $1,099 in our review configuration, it's certainly gentler on your wallet than a similarly configured Acer Predator 15, which currently sells for around $1,400.

Acer cut some corners with the display to get there, but its easy upgradability makes it a laptop you can keep gaming on for the long term. The battery life also impressed us.
