And I truly wish that chip is in the Ally X. Perhaps the battery life could be extended even further too. Now then, I have a dilemma. Since I am already using an ROG Ally, should I upgrade to the Ally X? Is it even considered an upgrade since the performance is the same, but I get a bunch of quality of life improvements on the Ally X? As for the price, the ROG Ally X is at RM4,299 – which is a whole thousand more than the ROG Ally when it was first announced. Given that the Ally has come down in price, it’s not easy to pick between the Ally and the Ally X. Remember – Ally X has a lot of upgrades over the original Ally, but ultimately – you still get the same level of performance at double the battery life and no more annoying fan noise.

The Asus ROG Ally provides improvements upon the Steam Deck formula in most areas, with the more streamlined nature of Valve’s software being that devices main coup over the Asus. But, it offers a sleeker chassis, a more open operating system as well as faster gaming performance. You will have to fork out around twice the price of the Steam Deck to get this machine though. There’s now key competition at a similar price now too, with the Lenovo Legion Go offering a larger and higher resolution display, as well as the neat trick of detachable controllers. However, the Asus ROG Ally beats it for its first-party software experience, portability and more satisying controls. Performance is impressive given the fact this is a handheld system but, with a typical 10fps improvement on the Steam Deck, it’s not significant enough to be a no-brainer purchase. It’s difficult to hit a high enough frame rate to make the most of the 120Hz refresh rate and some games, such as Returnal, are unplayable even with compromised graphics settings.

If you’re new to the whole PC gaming handheld thing, and want to play more than just your Steam library without messing about with Linux, the Asus ROG Ally X is now the obvious choice. It lasts longer than the original, has an easily upgradeable SSD, and more RAM than any Steam Deck. The refined ergonomics also put both the MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go in the shade. It’s not perfect: Windows 11 still doesn’t feel entirely happy on a small screen, and the display’s colours and contrast aren’t a match for the Steam Deck OLED – even if the Ally’s higher resolution and refresh rate levels the playing field a bit. The price is a lot spicier than Valve’s handheld, too – it’s now almost in gaming laptop territory. Original ROG Ally shouldn’t be in a rush to upgrade, then, and the Steam Deck OLED remains my top pick – but the gap is narrower than ever.

They're accomplished in some regards, but their pricing means they're almost guaranteed to be niche in terms of overall sales – and the Xbox Ally X epitomises that. It's a great bit of kit if you can afford it – the best ROG Ally out there now, in fact, and up there as one of the best Windows handhelds ever on paper. However, it's also undeniably pricey – and used prices for the Asus ROG Ally X, for example, make that a hard sell. I think this Xbox machine is better than the standard Xbox Ally, since it's going to age more gracefully thanks to its more powerful chip, but I also don't know how many people want to spend that money right now. Especially without an OLED display upgrade.

Microsoft's powerful handhelds continue to slightly baffle. They're accomplished in some regards, but their pricing means they're almost guaranteed to be niche in terms of overall sales – and the Xbox Ally X epitomises that. It's a great bit of kit if you can afford it – the best ROG Ally out there now, in fact, and up there as one of the best Windows handhelds ever on paper. However, it's also undeniably pricey – and used prices for the Asus ROG Ally X, for example, make that a hard sell. I think this Xbox machine is better than the standard Xbox Ally, since it's going to age more gracefully thanks to its more powerful chip, but I also don't know how many people want to spend that money right now. Especially without an OLED display upgrade.

I live in a paradoxical mind. On the one hand, I sit on my lawn chair saying gaming handhelds have gotten too damn expensive. But on the other hand, I can’t lie — this is the best PC gaming handheld I’ve ever used, and I’d feel OK dropping $999 on it. Impressive performance paired with a giant battery and power efficiency — all deeply rooted in a stripped down Windows 11 with a slick Xbox UI to navigate and a All I’d say is just think about the library you have and the ways you play. If you’re leaning more towards indie, and you’re OK shaving off some textures in your AAA games, then a cheaper handheld is more than enough. Or if you dabble more in strategy, you can get some great gaming laptops for this price. If you’re back here after thinking that through, you have your answer. Go play to your heart’s content!

When the ROG Ally first debuted two years ago, it was a promising PC gaming handheld console. The idea of playing PC games anywhere and anytime is great, but it was met with two major flaws: The battery life and an unoptimised Windows 11 user interface for handheld (also not forgetting the microSD card issue). Over time, ASUS ROG improved the battery life with the Ally X, but the UI is still very Windows-ish. The newest successor, called the ROG Xbox Ally series (instead of the ROG Ally 2), has finally arrived. Although I only had a week of playing the Xbox Ally X, I can safely say that ASUS ROG has finally brought its 'A' game. In fact, the Xbox Ally X is probably the best PC gaming handheld console we can now get in Malaysia.

I live in a paradoxical mind. On the one hand, I sit on my lawn chair saying gaming handhelds have gotten too damn expensive. But on the other hand, I can’t lie — this is the best PC gaming handheld I’ve ever used, and I’d feel OK dropping $999 on it. Impressive performance paired with a giant battery and power efficiency — all deeply rooted in a stripped down Windows 11 with a slick Xbox UI to navigate and a All I’d say is just think about the library you have and the ways you play. If you’re leaning more towards indie, and you’re OK shaving off some textures in your AAA games, then a cheaper handheld is more than enough. Or if you dabble more in strategy, you can get some great gaming laptops for this price. If you’re back here after thinking that through, you have your answer. Go play to your heart’s content!

The textured grips are really nice, as is the jet black colourway that is exclusive to the X iteration of the Xbox Ally.The hardware is great, the performance is what we’d expect from a handheld PC and frankly ASUS has done a bang-up job with its own software. But Microsoft lets the team down on this project. Windows still works but we really would have liked to have seen the Redmond colossus offering up more than the X logo here and crafted something special for the first handheld bearing its name.Frankly, it looks like Microsoft phoned it’s participation on this project in.ASUS though, stellar job folks.

Of course, that's a lot of conditionals. Plainly speaking, the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme doesn't particularly impress versus its predecessor. As we said earlier in the review, if you were hoping for a big performance uplift due to the 33% larger GPU, well it's just not there. Some games do actually benefit pretty significantly, and if you take into account the gains from playing in the Xbox Full Screen Experience, then this machine can be as much as 40% faster than the original ROG Ally X.

The power packed into this portable gamer is pretty impressive. Even on the basic Silent mode, you can happily play Diablo 4 on Ultra graphics settings, while the likes of Tony Hawk also runs well. Boost the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X to the Performance or Turbo modes and AAA PC titles like Indiana Jones are more than playable, even on higher graphics settings. Even better is the battery life, which ranks among the best of any handheld gaming console I've tested in 2025. The Xbox ROG Ally X supplies three to four hours of non-stop game action on one charge, even on Performance and 25w Ultra modes. That's better than I experienced on the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2 (when playing AAA games). And while you don't have an OLED panel, games still look great on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X.

Portability has become increasingly important in recent times. The sales success of the Nintendo Switch meant both Microsoft and Sony rushed to develop their own. The PlayStation Portal was Sonys version. We all eagerly anticipated the Xbox one, especially as rumours were that it would be a full on handheld. The reveal back in June certainly gave us pause. Not so much a portable Xbox, instead it was more akin to a Steamdeck. A portable PC. Being produced by ASUS Republic of Gamers brand had us fearing for our wallets. Whilst it is hardly priced at the everyman there is so much flexibility and quality hardware in the ROG Xbox Ally that if you want what it offers, nothing else comes close. We worried when we first saw it that it was going to be locked to the Xbox infrastructure.

It’s also worth mentioning that Asus sells a $149 product called the Bulwark Dock, which lets you plug in a variety of devices, including the Xbox Ally X, to monitors, TVs and other peripherals. With 7-in-1 connectivity, you can plug in laptops, phones and other handhelds. It’s also got a stand for your device and an anti-slip rubber base. I tried it with the Ally X and it worked well, if not entirely suited for my personal setup. (I don’t yet have a proper desk and primarily use an already full entertainment stand.) Really, it’s a pretty solid investment if you’re someone who games with any portable device, even if you don’t end up going with the Ally X.

While the ROG Xbox Ally X lays the groundwork for a bright Windows 11 gaming handheld future, it makes me wonder where Xbox is headed. Is this the precursor to a Microsoft-made handheld that's actually just the next Xbox? Is the Xbox layer over Windows 11 the start of the Xbox-PC merger that's been rumored for years? It's still unclear, but the release of the Xbox Ally X feels like the start of a new direction for Microsoft and the Xbox brand. At launch, the Xbox Ally X experience is far from perfect, making its $1,000 USD ($1,300 CAD) price tag difficult to justify. There are just too many features that lack refinement, like the disconnect between the new Xbox menu and Armoury Crate, the fact that some third-party games don't appear in your Xbox library (EA's app, I'm looking at you), and that updates need to be downloaded through several different apps, both in Xbox and desktop mode.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X Review | Buy This, Not The Steam Deck?

The power packed into this portable gamer is pretty impressive. Even on the basic Silent mode, you can happily play Diablo 4 on Ultra graphics settings, while the likes of Tony Hawk also runs well. Boost the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X to the Performance or Turbo modes and AAA PC titles like Indiana Jones are more than playable, even on higher graphics settings. Even better is the battery life, which ranks among the best of any handheld gaming console I've tested in 2025. The Xbox ROG Ally X supplies three to four hours of non-stop game action on one charge, even on Performance and 25w Ultra modes. That's better than I experienced on the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2 (when playing AAA games). And while you don't have an OLED panel, games still look great on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X.

Portability has become increasingly important in recent times. The sales success of the Nintendo Switch meant both Microsoft and Sony rushed to develop their own. The PlayStation Portal was Sonys version. We all eagerly anticipated the Xbox one, especially as rumours were that it would be a full on handheld. The reveal back in June certainly gave us pause. Not so much a portable Xbox, instead it was more akin to a Steamdeck. A portable PC. Being produced by ASUS Republic of Gamers brand had us fearing for our wallets. Whilst it is hardly priced at the everyman there is so much flexibility and quality hardware in the ROG Xbox Ally that if you want what it offers, nothing else comes close. We worried when we first saw it that it was going to be locked to the Xbox infrastructure.

It’s also worth mentioning that Asus sells a $149 product called the Bulwark Dock, which lets you plug in a variety of devices, including the Xbox Ally X, to monitors, TVs and other peripherals. With 7-in-1 connectivity, you can plug in laptops, phones and other handhelds. It’s also got a stand for your device and an anti-slip rubber base. I tried it with the Ally X and it worked well, if not entirely suited for my personal setup. (I don’t yet have a proper desk and primarily use an already full entertainment stand.) Really, it’s a pretty solid investment if you’re someone who games with any portable device, even if you don’t end up going with the Ally X.

While the ROG Xbox Ally X lays the groundwork for a bright Windows 11 gaming handheld future, it makes me wonder where Xbox is headed. Is this the precursor to a Microsoft-made handheld that's actually just the next Xbox? Is the Xbox layer over Windows 11 the start of the Xbox-PC merger that's been rumored for years? It's still unclear, but the release of the Xbox Ally X feels like the start of a new direction for Microsoft and the Xbox brand. At launch, the Xbox Ally X experience is far from perfect, making its $1,000 USD ($1,300 CAD) price tag difficult to justify. There are just too many features that lack refinement, like the disconnect between the new Xbox menu and Armoury Crate, the fact that some third-party games don't appear in your Xbox library (EA's app, I'm looking at you), and that updates need to be downloaded through several different apps, both in Xbox and desktop mode.

Finally, should you buy the ROG Xbox Ally? Well, it depends on you. I’d say the ROG Xbox Ally is a great entry point to the world of handheld PC gaming. It’s a mostly hassle-free experience thanks to the Xbox Full Screen Experience, though we can still change back to the traditional desktop mode to tinker around some more if we want to. If you already own the ROG Ally with the Z1 like I have, then the upgrades are mostly in the grip comfort and quality of life features like having another USB-C port, a larger battery, and also a microSD card reader that wouldn’t burn. At the price of RM2,699, I think it’s a good device – especially if you play some not-so-demanding games like… let’s say metroidvanias like Ender Lilies or Ender Magnolia, or platformers like Yooka-Replayee. It’s definitely a much better and more affordable option to play PC games compared to emulating them on a phone – that’s for sure.

Overall, I really like the Xbox Ally. The hardware is very good, it’s extremely comfortable even in longer playing sessions, and the battery life is decent (depending on what games you play). However, some of what makes the Xbox Ally special won’t be exclusive forever. Other handhelds will likely ship with AMD’s solid Ryzen Z2 A chip, and the Xbox software experience should eventually come to all handhelds and PCs. The ultimate question, of course, is whether you should buy the Xbox Ally. At $799, it’s a steep price, especially for a product that frankly doesn’t do anything unique. There are a ton of solutions for portable gaming, including other handhelds that cost less (the Steam Deck and, laughably, the also very expensive Switch 2).

Microsoft finally getting on board the PC gaming handheld train in an official capacity is great news, and the Xbox ROG Ally is a strong start. Behind-the-scenes work has finally stopped Windows from feeling like a lead weight, and the full-screen Xbox interface is a massive improvement over what we had before. On the hardware front, the controller-like grips also make a massive difference to comfort and playability. I don’t think any of that means all of the Xbox faithful should rush out to buy one, though. The base model Ally can’t match the cheaper Steam Deck OLED for performance muscle, and it doesn’t last as long per charge. Valve’s machine has a superior OLED screen, too.

Well, the only benefit of it retaining the display as before is that the price didn't go up by much. The ROG Xbox Ally starts at PHP 36,995, and it already comes with 3 months of free Xbox Game Pass subscription. If you find the performance of the standard Xbox Ally lacking, the X variant retails for PHP 56,995 featuring a more powerful chip and a larger 80Wh battery.

Overall, I really like the Xbox Ally. The hardware is very good, it’s extremely comfortable even in longer playing sessions, and the battery life is decent (depending on what games you play). However, some of what makes the Xbox Ally special won’t be exclusive forever. Other handhelds will likely ship with AMD’s solid Ryzen Z2 A chip, and the Xbox software experience should eventually come to all handhelds and PCs. The ultimate question, of course, is whether you should buy the Xbox Ally. At $799, it’s a steep price, especially for a product that frankly doesn’t do anything unique. There are a ton of solutions for portable gaming, including other handhelds that cost less (the Steam Deck and, laughably, the also very expensive Switch 2).

Microsoft finally getting on board the PC gaming handheld train in an official capacity is great news, and the Xbox ROG Ally is a strong start. Behind-the-scenes work has finally stopped Windows from feeling like a lead weight, and the full-screen Xbox interface is a massive improvement over what we had before. On the hardware front, the controller-like grips also make a massive difference to comfort and playability. I don’t think any of that means all of the Xbox faithful should rush out to buy one, though. The base model Ally can’t match the cheaper Steam Deck OLED for performance muscle, and it doesn’t last as long per charge. Valve’s machine has a superior OLED screen, too.

All-in-all, ASUS made some serious improvements to the ROG Xbox Ally as compared to the original ROG Ally. At the same time, it still retains all of the looks and gamer feel of the original handheld device. With a new processor, it can now run more graphic-intensive games. The battery lasts a lot longer too. If only ASUS fitted a larger screen or even an OLED one, it would be even better. Well, the only benefit of it retaining the display as before is that the price didn't go up by much. The ROG Xbox Ally starts at PHP 36,995, and it already comes with 3 months of free Xbox Game Pass subscription. If you find the performance of the standard Xbox Ally lacking, the X variant retails for PHP 56,995 featuring a more powerful chip and a larger 80Wh battery.

Asus:

Det här är mindre avancerade grafikkort för användare som ändå vill kunna spela spel. Nya spel bör vara spelbara, men ofta bara med låga detaljinställningar och låg upplösning. Eftersom moderna grafikkort i den här klassen har låg strömförbrukning kan även batteritiden vara bra.

AMD Radeon 780M:

Integrerat grafikkort i Ryzen 7040 mobilseriens APU:er baserat på RDNA3-arkitekturen med 12 CU:er (= 768 shaders) och en klockhastighet på upp till 3 GHz.

AMD Radeon 740M: Integrerat grafikkort i Ryzen 7040 Mobile Series APU:er baserade på RDNA3-arkitekturen med 4 av 12 CU:er (= 256 shaders) och en klockhastighet på upp till 2,5 GHz.

AMD Strix / Gorgon Point:

Ryzen Z2 Extreme: En relativt kraftfull processor i Strix Point-familjen för handdatorer med en blandning av tre Zen 5- och fem Zen 5c-kärnor som arbetar i 2 - 5 GHz. Jämfört med den liknande Ryzen AI 7 PRO 360 erbjuder Z2 Extreme inte Ryzen AI NPU.

AMD Renoir (Ryzen 4000 APU):
