Asus are a company that I think of for computers and motherboards. So when the opportunity to look at a mobile phone from them it seems an interesting option. The name puzzled me for a moment until I related the ‘Pad’ part to a tablet. The minus points no micro SD card port, no replaceable battery and that proprietary charging connector.

The PadFone is such a good idea you wonder why nobody thought of it before. Despite the lack of storage expansion, the benefits of having a phone with an optional ten-inch screen and a reserve battery are obvious, while the handset itself is every bit as good as the Nexus 4. Better in some ways. The price isn’t exorbitant, either. If you opted for the most affordable Android alternatives - the 16GB Nexus 4 and the Asus MeMo Pad 10 - you would still be looking at around £530 but with 16GB less storage in the phone, a less powerful chipset in your tablet and a lot less convenience.

The PadFone works like any other phone and has a screen that measures 5 inches diagonally. When you want a tablet experience, you simply slip the phone into a slot on the back of the tablet display, which is included. All the apps on the phone now work on the 9-inch tablet. The phone is what runs the tablet. Asus is bringing this concept to the U.S. for the first time.

The fact is, though, the people most likely to be attracted to the PadFone concept are also probably the type that already own a tablet. And as a smartphone alone, the PadFone X is still a great option, but not quite on the same level as the Galaxy S5 or HTC One (M8). The GS5 is faster, lasts longer, and has a better camera. The HTC One (M8) is the most beautiful phone on the market and has better overall performance as well. Either of those options are better for anyone who already owns a modern tablet, but if you're in the market for a tablet and smartphone upgrade, the PadFone X is a great deal and a solid option.

De här grafikkorten är inte lämpliga för spel. Om spelet fungerar alls är det ofta med mycket låg bildfrekvens och andra problem med renderingen. Vanligt kontorsbruk och surfande bör däremot fungera bra.

Qualcomm Adreno 320: En grafikkrets i Qualcomms Snapdragon-SoC (System-on-a-Chip).

Bara vissa äldre spel kan spelas flytande med de här grafikkorten. Kretsar med delat minne har fördelen att de utvecklar mindre värme och ger längre batteritid. De duger gott för kontorsbruk, surfande och enklare bildbehandling, men spel och HD-video är inte i syftet med de här kretsarna.
