Samsung plockar nya placeringar på den konkurrensutsatta prestandamarknaden med Galaxy Alpha. Även om den är i övrigt jämförbar med Samsungs egen Galaxy S5, innebär den förfinade tillverkningsprocessen och det utökade lagringsminnet på 32 GB att Samsung begär några extra hundralappar för Galaxy Alpha. 

Exteriören är tilltalande, en stabil metallram och elegant design. På insidan används en likaledes tilltalande åttakärnig processor från Samsung, som gör ett mycket bra jobb i kombination med en snabb GPU och 2 GB RAM – även om Galaxy S5 har betydligt starkare utrustning. 

Super AMOLED-skärmen har visserligen bara en upplösning på 720p, men det visade sig vara fullt tillräckligt under vardagliga omständigheter. Det intuitiva TouchWiz-gränssnittet och den senaste versionen av Android, 4.4.4 KitKat, gör ett gott intryck. 

Konfigurationen är generöst tilltagen, med höghastighets-Wi-Fi, NFC, universella kommunikationsmoduler och en anständig huvudkamera. Det faktum att den senare vacklar lite i dåligt omgivningsljus kan vi ha överseende med. I gengäld är den långa batteritiden och fingeravtryckssensorn tilltalande aspekter. Den utmärkta röstkvaliteten är också lovvärd. Den största kritiken vi har är att Samsung tagit bort minneskortplatsen i Galaxy Alpha. Därför måste användare som behöver mer än ungefär 25 GB (netto) använda sig av t.ex. onlinelagring.

Samsungs Galaxy Alpha är totalt sett ett intressant alternativ i toppsegmentet. Det finns för närvarande flera alternativ, särskilt iPhone 6, men även Samsungs egna Galaxy S5. Vi lämnar köprekommendation till alla som sätter värde på en stabil och kompakt smartphone med ett högklassigt metallhölje – under förutsättning att man kan leva med de nämnda bristerna.
